That looks fantastic, I'd even consider a stay despite living only 30 minutes away. I love Winchester and staying there would really enhance anyone's stay in the city.

I can’t afford this, but can anyone comment on why Rick’s guidebooks completely skip Winchester? It’s an amazing city, full of history and where Jane Austen is buried. It’s also right next door to Chawton, where there is even more Jane Austen history.

Sleeps 10 so the cost isn’t ‘so’ bad starting at £450 week each.

Absolutely, Emma! With a group, it’s very affordable! With just me, not so much…. But I would sure love it.

This topic comes up all the time with regard to various places that are omitted from the RS guidebooks. RS says, “ Some guidebooks (like mine) are more opinionated and selective, choosing only the most worthwhile destinations in each country and covering them in depth.” (https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/trip-planning/comparing-guidebook-series)

I guess he didn’t think Winchester was one of the “most worthwhile” destinations.

I really enjoyed my visit to Winchester, but I visited England more than a dozen times before I got around to visiting Winchester. I doubt most visitors on their first or second trip to England make it to Winchester.

Take advantage of the Deanery while you can. A new Dean was appointed just before Christmas and takes office on 15 March, so will presumably be moving in before then.

You know, Emma and TexasTravelMom are right. It's affordable for a group.

It sleeps 10 so if 5 couples booked it paying £4,500 for a week that comes to around £900 per couple or £450 per person. For a week's stay in such a cool place, that's pretty great.

Rick's books are heavily curated and he chooses to write about places that he thinks most people would like. Just because he leaves out Winchester doesn't mean that he thinks it's not worth including; he just probably didn't think that it would add to that particular guidebook. That's why I usually go with other guidebooks for a lot of my trips because many of them go to places that Rick just doesn't cover in his books.
