We're having to change our planned travel from Exeter (can't return a rental car to the train station or on Sundays). I would appreciate ideas for places to see or things to do while in Plymouth. I know about the Mayflower steps and the lighthouse. The cathedral seems a bit new for my Gothic interests. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you.
No one has been or cares about poor Plymouth?
You could tour the Plymouth Gin distillery.

I've been there and I couldn't care much about it.
Poor old Plymouth got clobbered during the war. If you’re a fan of 1950/60s town planning, you might admire the shopping precinct but it’s definitely not a picturesque place.
However there are attractive and historic bits - Plymouth Hoe is well worth a look, and the Barbican area has restaurants and bars gathered around a few old harbour streets.
Is this AFTER dropping off the car or before? If before, use the car to take advantage of Plymouth’s proximity to Dartmoor and the pretty South Hams coastal area.
Sadly it’s a mostly plain - even ugly - city but in a great location.
Lemons-make-lemonade. Plymouth is interesting both despite of and because of its hard history. The military bombing of WW2 was followed by brutalist mid-20th-Century architecture in the rebuilding. Interesting, if only to dislike. "Interesting" is such a loaded word. The drive north to Dartmoor park traverses rugged landscapes that have long inspired dark tales of hauntings and mischief. Best known, perhaps, is Arthur Conan Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles. I was interested in seeing it all -- once.
If you like stately homes, you might enjoy visiting Saltram, a National Trust home.
Thanks. We'll pick up the car in Plymouth and return it there, but the rest of the time will be traveling the moors. I''ll be sorry to miss Exeter, but, maybe next time.
