Things to do around London Euston?

Hi,

Some friends and I are traveling to Scotland via the Caledonia sleeper train (leaving from Euston Station). We are flying from the States into London Heathrow on Sunday around 11:15 and taking the late train (around 23:00) up north. We were planning on taking the Underground to Euston station, throwing our luggage into the baggage hold there and trying to do a little sight seeing/food replenishment prior to getting on our train. I'm estimating that we'll have around 7hrs to kill and would love some advice on what to check out while we are in the area. Is there a better place to stop/store luggage/sight see on the way to Euston station? My original thinking was that it made sense to leave our luggage in the station where we are catching our sleeper train but I'm open to other ideas...Any advice is greatly appreciated! I should also mention 1) we are traveling at the end of June and 2) we are returning to London for a more in-depth visit but are starting in Scotland (hence the mad dash to the sleeper train!).

Thanks!
Allison

The British Museum in only a fifteen minute walk away. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum is 20 minutes away. St Pancras Station is next to the British Library mentioned above. Even if you're not catching a train from there it is a great place to walk around, lots of great eateries, you can take pictures of the Chunnel train, and check out this moving statute:

It will cost as much money for the excess luggage facility as an inexpensive hotel for the night - or day.

At Euston it is £6 per piece for up to 3 hours. You will need over 3 hours so it will be £10 per piece. I dunno how many friends and I is but lets say 4 in all and 2 pieces each - that's £80....

The British Library shuts art 5pm.

You will be in London by around 2.

It is a shame that you are doing the trip that way. Jetlag will zap you now for longer. You should be out in the fresh air and going to bed at a normal time to combat it. Now you will have 2 nights for it to get worse.... sorry.

The British Library is a great treat. First of all, it's FREE. The first floor has a room that contains great treasures of first editions and other great books, Inside this room is a smaller room with the Magna Carta. On the second floor, there is a really superb cafeteria. It's really worth a visit.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I was thinking the British Library but wasn't sure if that'd be enough.

Nigel - agree with you that the schedule is a little rough but, unfortunately, we have to get up north for wedding so not much choice. You are right about the luggage - it is going to be a little pricey. There will be 5 of us but we should only have 1 piece each (so still looking at a good 50 pounds). Are there inexpensive hotel rooms near Euston? I could see how having a cheap hotel room (even if just for a quick shower!) would be a better choice!

Various Travelodges, there is an Ibis across the road from Platform 17, Premier Inn, are all in the immediate vicinity; various small hotels are nearby too. Further away, on Grays Inn Road just beyond Kings Cross Station is the Tune hotel; there is a hostel and an IYH hostel.

Check out the Euston station beer or cider taps, former gatehouses, in front of the station. Also I would walk down a few blocks to St Pancras station and Renaissance hotel. Quite grand looking outside and inside and seen in various British movies. Next door is King's Cross with platform 9 3/4 as well as the Harry Potter store. Happy travels!

I'd suggest random encounters... It is in my nature - I love being left somewhere and just trying to find something I'd enjoy. On the other hand, it kinda depends on the size of the group - are you with 10 friends or with 3, also are you couples?
For the first, you'll be fine just following my suggestion - it will be fun with guaranteed laughter in every little store ;)
On the 2nd, look into Guide for couples in London - some good ideas for couples in London - having kids is optional :P
P.S. Enjoy your stay :)
