We will have three days in Bath in October and I am trying to decide if we should do these thermal baths in Bath. On the one hand it looks cool and my husband loves hot tubs. However, I'm thinking it could be rather touristy as well. Has anyone done it and how did you feel about it? Did you love it or think it was a waste of money? Is the water hot?
We did it. It WAS very cool, but we thought it was also very pricey. As I recall, the outdoor hot pool on the roof was nice and warm, and we liked the views. Indoors, there are multiple steam rooms, each with different scents, and those were a little too hot for me, but others seemed to enjoy them. I can't remember anything about the temperature of the indoor pool. (I think there's more than one now.)
Is it worth it? Well, even though we thought it was overpriced, we wanted to have a bath in Bath, so it was worth it to us. Also, the weather was cool with showers the day we were there, so it was nice to warm up and relax after touring around. We particularly enjoyed the rooftop pool.
I really like it. I live fairly nearby and have been quite a few times. It isn’t cheap but it’s a good experience and the views from the rooftop pool are impressive. The clientele are largely groups of friends or couples. I wouldn’t say it’s too touristy. Lots of locals go there.
Thank you for this question, Tammy, the timing is great.
We were looking at the webpage for the the Bath Bath Spa (I always like doubling words) just today. We are contemplating a trip to Freiburg im Breisgau, BW, Germany for another visit to Keidel Mineral Therme https://www.keideltherme.de/ which we like very much.
But the weather in the North Sea isn't great at the moment and we were casting about for an alternative which wouldn't involve a large ship, torrential rain and a 60 mph tailwind/SSW crosswind when we thought of Bath.
My eyes nearly popped out when i saw £40 midweek and £45 on the weekend per person for only 2 hours! They do include a robe and towel though... Keidel is €17.80 / €20.80 (£15.36 / £17.95 ) for all day and with all sorts of different water areas and (saunas extra).
I think we will give Bath Bath Spa a try one day but pretty much stick with Keidel when we can get there.
We like the city of Bath quite a lot and the surrounding area, drank the spa water once - it was worse than Pittville Park in Cheltenham and not much worse than Aachen, Germany - but had never been in the water.
If you go, Tammy, can you post your observations and reactions?
Thank you all for your replies, we have decided to take a bath in Bath.
@Nigel-yes I will report back how we liked it.
I couldn't resist going there in early May 2016. I didn't do any of the steam rooms, but I did do the indoor pool. It had a current(!) that came and went and was fun. It may not be there if things have changed inside.
I loved the rooftop pool. It had jets and waterfall apparatuses. People were there in typical European bathing attire. That means not much. I admired their chutzpah, especially that of the very, very large woman in a teeny tiny bikini.
At one point a tall and very well developed young man and his female companion arrived to go down the stairs into the pool. The woman seemed very shy, but he was getting all the attention anyway. I was next to the stairs under one of the waterfall things and had a full view of the pool except for the stairs. I noticed everyone, male and female, staring toward the stairs, so I looked to my left and I could understand why they were staring. My first thought was rugby player. My 2nd thought was the Men at Work song, Down Under, specifically the lyric, "Buying bread from a man in Brussels, He was six-foot-four and full of muscle."
One of my main goals at the spa was to get a massage. I scheduled it before I even left home. It was well worth the money. I took my oldest and ugliest swimsuit and threw it away in the massage area after I was done in the pools. That left me with only the terry robe I was given. At the time I weighed about 200 pounds and the robe was not quite big enough to cover me comfortably on my way back to the dressing area, but it covered enough that I didn't scare anyone.
About the dressing area. It was unisex. All spa visitors went through chutes that revealed nothing but did remind me of cattle chutes where the animal is held for vaccination. We entered one side, changed inside the chute and left the other side. The lockers were right outside the exit door. All our belongings went into a locker, leaving us with the locker key, a towel and robe for wherever we went next.
Neither phones nor cameras were allowed. I saw one person who thought those signs weren't meant for her. Her camera was confiscated at the rooftop pool when she got it from her robe and tried to take a picture of the pool, which of course would've included the people in it. Yes, there were staff members there for your safety and to protect visitors' privacy.
That was 7 years ago. I hope it is even better for your visit.
The spas in Germany that I’ve been to are way better than Bath Spa. Don’t expect anything like that. But Bath Spa does have the city views in its plus column.
