Today I have walked the first mile (the only part yet open) of a planned new footpath the full length of the west shore of Windermere in the Lake District.
That mile is from Newby Bridge to the Lakeside steamer pier- it goes along the river shore and includes a new bridge over the Haverthwaite Steam Railway. It has only been open for 3 weeks, and today went through a lovely bluebell wood on route.
The path is flat and fully accessible and fulfils a long held need for a walking route to Lakeside pier replacing a hair raising road walk or a less than easy walk on the base of the fellside.
I look forward to the rest of the path opening, as far as Claife Heights is planned to open late summer.
I was going down to Lakeside to catch the first steamer of the day to Bowness, on a very roundabout route (3 hours out of my way) to Watermillock (Ullswater)- a village which is really just a scattered collection of houses and farms, set back from the lake.
While Watermillock was a business call, it was nice to start the day as almost a tourist.
It was on a brilliant and little known train ticket- the Lakes Day Ranger- £28.50 or £18.80 with a railcard- which covers almost all trains in Cumbria and North Lancashire, all buses and the Windermere steamers.
This is the second new footpath in Cumbria in a few weeks.
