The Northern Lights in the Lake District

Last night (Friday night) in the Lake District we had a stunning display of the Aurora Borealis and right out on the west coast (and as far across the north as Scarborough in North Yorkshire)- easily visible with the naked eye.

Anyone up in the Lakes if you go out between 10 and 11 pm tonight (Saturday) they are expected to give a good show again, if the weather is as good as it is currently.

No promises, but a very good chance it will happen.

The images that are being shown online by newspapers here (and the BBC website) are spectacular! I would love to see the sky displaying this wonder in person. Simply amazing. Glad you were able to experience this!

The Aurora was actually seen pretty much across the U.K. down to the south coast last night. My son is currently in Shetland and he sent pictures but said the reports he has seen suggested it was better further south. We apparently had a great display here in Preston but we were out at a music event and missed it.

It was a stunning display even as far south as Portsmouth. Unfortunately I was in Gdansk and didn't see it.

Aurora watchers might be interested in this facebook page run by a neighbour of mine here in the Isle of Skye. He's written a free App for aurora spotters and had been interviewed many times on BBC Scotland. His photos are amazing. The aurora on Friday night here was amazing and I was able to see pink and red for the first time ever with the naked eye (I can usually see the greens). However, because it doesn't get very dark this far north at this time of year, the spectacular show was brighter in England. Saturday night we were 'clouded out' so no repeat! I think that'll be it now until the season starts again in October.

Sadly I was clouded out last night as well in the Lake District. It had been a wonderful day of blue skies and still was when I went to bed early for an hour or so planning to get up again at dusk. By dusk it had turned all cloudy (and still is this morning) so that was that.

I believe said App writer is a fellow Yorkshireman.

First time I ever saw them was in 2021, on my birthday of all days up at Rubhna Hunnish

Saw them there last April 21 to a mere 5 hours after the most single astonishing sunset in my life.

I left a framed photo of them from the April trip but think its gone awol ,so hopefully in 3 weeks will be back to replace it
