Thanks for the advice--1 week in London

Hi all,

We're back from our week in London (July 11-17). It was great!!!

As a refresher--I asked lots of questions on here before our trip, you were all so much help and I appreciate it. This was a quickly planned, shoe-string budget trip. We found a super cheap airfare at the beginning of May and jumped on it. and started quickly planning our week in London. We had a ball! Saw everything we wanted to, ate good food, shopped and had a lot of fun. It was the first trip to London for my adult daughter and I. Traveling on a shoe-string budget was a bit of a challenge but, with lots of questions and advice, it all worked out well.

Here is a link to my photos. If you click on the 1st photo, it will enlarge all the photos and tell you what the photo is.

I'll just give a basic overview of our day-by-day itinerary and maybe some comments. We packed a lot in and never stopped!

Day 1--
Arrived at 8:30 am, bought Oyster cards and tubed to our lodging at London School of Economics Carr-Saunders dorm in Fitzrovia, dropped bags and off walking to Regent's Park and the Queen's Rose Gardens. Loved the park and it was a sunny day and a great way to start the trip after a long sleepless flight.

Walked along Regent's Canal and up to Camden. what a unique place with lots of interesting people and shops!

St. Paul's Evensong was next--what a lovely service and such a beautiful place of worship.

Dinner was Toad in a Hole and a Guinness at Black Friar's Pub. Good food-slow service!

Day 2--
Westminster Abbey with a 10 am Verger tour. Fantastic!! Loved the Verger, he was knowledgeable and funny. Yet another beautiful place of worship and history.

Walked to Buckingham Palace via St. James Park. Lovely walk. We were surprised that it wasn't busier outside the palace since it was noon'ish. People were very courteous about waiting turns to take photos in front of the big gates. Loved imagining what was going on at that moment in the huge palace :) Had fun watching the two patrolling guards.

Loved our next stop--The Royal Mews. Such beautiful carriages and history. Lovely horses too.

Laughing Halibut and fish 'n chips was the menu for tonight. Good dinner.

Day 3--
Today was Greenwich day. We took the Thames River Cruise (with 1 stop only) boat to Greenwich. browsed the market, bought some nice jewelry and walked up the hill to the GMT Clock & Prime Meridian Line.

Back down the hill to see the ship in a bottle at the Maritime museum and onto my favorite stop of the day--the Fan Museum and afternoon tea. LOVED both. Tea & snacks were really good and a bargain and the museum unique and lovely!

Tubed all the way up to Camden again as DD wanted to find some more Banksy art--score-- and then back to the dorm--exhausted!

Day 4--
Went to Mass at the lovely St. Charles Borromeo church.

More Banksy art, a walk through the beautiful Hyde park visiting the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain and beautiful water gardens on the way to Kennsington Palace.

Continued on to Fortnum & Mason where we bought teas to bring home. We had reservations at Blacklock for Sunday Roast. It was delicious and the best service and meal of the trip.

Liberty of London and Selfriridge's were the last stops of the day. Back to the dorm at 7 pm, shower and bed. 10 miles walked!

Looks like I'm maxing out my characters for this post. I guess I'll continue with part 2 in the next post. See you there :)

Continuing part 2---

Day 5--
Busy day today! Off early to the TKTS booth hoping for "Phantom of the Opera" discount tickets. No luck :( We decided to try to go to the theater directly and see if we could get tickets there. A nice custodian told us to wait a few minutes and we could get into the Box Office. The lovely Box Office man was able to find us unobstructed, well located tickets for Wednesday night and in our price range---YEAH!!!

Rushing over to the Changing of the Horse Guards for a good spot to watch. Accomplished! Saw all the different facets of the ceremony--so fantastic! It also happened to be a 99% all woman group in both coming and going guards.

Harrods's was skipped on Sunday so off we went to visit there. Amazing food hall.

National Gallery and the Impressionists were next in line. Huge museum and lovely. Since we were almost next door to St. Martin-in-the-Field's we popped over and listened to the choir practice.

We watched street performers at Piccadilly Circus on our way to Chinatown. Dnner was nearby for us at Brassiere Zedel. Loved the 3 course special!

Sore feet and bed after midnight.

Day 6--
"Slept in" until 8:30 am and then walked over to the British Museum. HUGE & overwhelming museum. Especially loved the African art among other exhibits. The British Library and its Special Collection room were next on the itinerary. Fun to see the Beatles memorabilia.

Tubed to Covent Gardens, browsed the Apple Court Market. Walked forever trying to find Neal's Yard Dairy. Finally found it and was rewarded with lots of samples and a purchase of the most delicious Stichelton cheese-yum! Changed eating plans and stopped at Rock & Sole Plaice--good choice.

Packed to go home and "early" bed at 10:45 pm.

Day 7 (last full day)--

1st stop Crown Jewels at the Tower of London. Rode the conveyor belt 3 times gawking at them. Yeoman Warder tour next and 11:15 am Tower Ravens talk. Loved the Tower and it's history.

Walked across the most beautiful Tower Bridge to the South Bank following the Thames to the Southwark Cathedral, another beautiful sacred space. Almost next door was the Borough Market--stopped of course. Browsed, ate a salt beef sandwich and had a goat's milk ice cream. Such. good. food!

Planned on going to Garden 120 for the views. Read it was free, no tickets needed and not crowded like the Sky Garden. Hilariously, we mistakenly ended up at Sky Garden in line to go up the elevator thinking we were at Garden 120. How does that happen??? I kept telling DD that it was not supposed to be crowded, had no facilities at the top...none of which were true where we were standing. What a happy accident--we LOVED the views and had no trouble getting in. Serendipity I guess :)

Back to the dorm to change and freshen up as tonight was our theater night--so excited to see "Phantom of the Opera" at Her Majesty's Theatre! The show and theater were all that we had hoped for. LOVED every minute.

Dropped into bed, we fly home tomorrow.

Day 8--

Had our last breakfast at the dorm, finished packing, and on the tube to LHR at 11 am. Quickly through security and to our gate. Uneventful flight home.

Almost maxed out characters again. Part 3 and ending coming up in the next. post

Finishing with part 3--

Our lodging worked out well (we stayed at the London School of Economics dorm--Carr-Saunders). It was perfectly located in an interesting neighborhood, close to a Tube station and a busy shopping street (Tottenham Court Rd). It provided a full buffet breakfast each morning which was good and we didn't eat again until dinner usually. We shared a twin bedded room which was really small--enough room for both beds, a night stand, a wardrobe and a sink/mirror. There was no A/C in the dorm and it was quite warm for London. We had a small oscillating fan I got from reception and our window opened at the top only. It was OK to sleep. We were gone all day long and only back to the dorm to shower and sleep. We had to use a shared bathroom and separate shower. The whole week we were there I'll bet I only saw 3-4 other people in the bathrooms and never a single soul in the shower. The shower I always used was in its own private room with locking door. The cost was fantastic for central London! For the 2 of us (DD and I), it was fine--clean, well located, breakfast included and cheap!

We flew "Basic Economy" on United Air--carry-on only and no choice of seats. On the trip TO London we had middle row of middle row seats on a full flight :( Not comfortable to sleep at all but, we knew that going in. On the trip home, we had a very nice gate agent and a 1/2 full flight, so he gave us back to back window seats with no one next to each of us. Perfect! So much nicer than our flight to London. But, again, it's just dealer's luck with Basic Economy.

We used only public transportation and walked between 7-10 miles PER DAY. My feet were sore at the end of the day :)

Our weather was great--no rain at all during the day and warm temps.

My favorite things--watching the Changing of the Horse Guards, seeing Phantom of the Opera, Evensong at St. Paul's Cathedral and the Verger tour at Westminster Abbey. Also loved the Queen's Rose Garden, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London...loved it all.

Favorite meals--Blacklock and Brasserie Zedel.

Favorite mistake--accidentally going to Sky Garden instead of Garden 120 ;)

Londoners were unfailingly helpful and friendly when stopped and questioned.

Thanks to everyone who offered help and advice--it was so appreciated! It was a great and special trip with DD. But, nothing beats taking a shower in your own bathroom and sleeping in your own bed.

Thanks again :)

You wrote a great trip report, it was wonderful to read. Having been to London five times, I loved reading about where you went, what you saw and where you ate. I too like to plan out where I want to eat before I get to a city or a town! I looked at all your photos and they are wonderful. Excellent subject matters, clear, crisp, and all around great photos. So interesting and fun to look at!

I am going back to London for two weeks and your report and photo gallery really helped me in planning my trip for next year! There is so much to see and do in London that I plan to do things I never got to see and some things I want to revisit like walking across the Tower Bridge and visiting the British Museum which I have not been to since 2005.

Are you planning another visit to London? Or maybe tackle Paris next time?

Thank you for listing all the pubs and restaurants. Happy to hear you had such a lovely time, it shows in the photos and in your trip report.

What a fun time you all had! I'm so very glad the LSE dorm worked out for you all AND that the advice you got here helped your trip!

Your pictures are terrific and I can tell you two are having the best time - mostly because you are both just glowing!

Love that you loved the Verger tour - really worth the extra few GBP's!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write up and post your Trip Report.

Thanks so much for the nice comments!

Some replies--

Glad I could make some of you smile!

Free/inexpensive is the name of the game when we travel. In our family we like to say "we have champagne taste on a beer budget" :)

Blacklock's Sunday roast was fantastic! I tried online reservations with no luck. I decided to call and beg--they squeezed us in. Loved it there!!!

Always planning another trip--just need to find the super cheap airfare to get there :) We did score a super cheap flight to Barcelona for this upcoming spring. Really looking forward to that trip too!

We loved the Verger tour--definitely made the visit to Westminster!

Thanks again.
