Temperature in Cornwall and Devon during mid-July

We will be in Exeter and then Cornwall for a week in mid-July.
Do we need to take jackets? Will it be chilly at night.
I was surprised that weather.com indicated temps would range from 50-70 degrees F.

I'd go to timeanddate.com and look at the actual, day-by-day temperatures for July 2019, July 2018, July 2017, etc. I just looked at last year's data, and 50 to low 70s is what I saw. I imagine the range would be a bit wider if I had look at five years' data. It got down to 46 on July 2, 2019.

On one trip to Cornwall we made, the weather was so good we went to the beach for the day and despite my best efforts - I rarely lie on the beach all day, preferring to wander around, beachcomb, etc. - I managed to get both sunburnt and sun stroke. The next day the weather was grey, foggy, windy and positively freezing and we spent all day in the cottage we’d rented. Which was just as well as I couldn’t wear much in the way of clothes!

Forecasting weather at this range is much like predicting Brexit outcomes.....nobody knows with any sort of certainty. As I’ve often counselled, layers are the way forward and plan for all eventualities! So yes, a warm fleece and/or jacket should be in your luggage even if you never need it.

I’m sure you’ll have a good trip whatever the weather, but fingers crossed it’s good for you!

The hottest temperatures in England in summer tend to be in the South East, as that is closest to the Continent which is generally the source of hot air, up from Spain or further south.

Cornwall has a moderating influence from the sea all year round.

As an example, this newspaper report from last year indicates temperatures up to 35C in the South East, but only 22C in Truro.
