Ted Lasso Fans? Richmond area visit

Has anyone made the trip to see Richmond? We are Ted Lasso fans (TV show on Apple TV) and would love to see where the show is filmed. We are game to take the tube but want to know any tips.

Thanks, Christie

Was in Richmond all of last November visiting.

Never seen Ted Lasso but worked as Film and TV Location Manager for 30 years.

Richmond is a very nice neighborhood about 30 minutes from Central London. Good coffee at Butter Beans which is adjacent to the Station.

If you are walkers The White Cross which faces the river is about 20 minutes from The Richmond Quadrant.

Found the Angel and Crown pub in 2019. Next to the Alligators Mouth, a cute children’s bookstore.

Wonderful Chinese food at The Dragon Inn but aways from the city center.

Lots of lovely pubs. Have no clue which pub was used in Ted Lasso but imagine one of those close by the Richmond Common. Cricketers, Prince’s Head.

Personally i find the Victorian Inn pub a true gem. Cosy. Old school. Great landlady. Its next door to Teddington Cheese which I love.

If you stroll through the massive Richmond Park you can enjoy a pint at the Lass O Richmond. Its a Young’s pub so menu isn’t adventurous but perfectly fine.

Closer to North Sheen is the gorgeous Hare and Hounds pub. The Jolly Gardener was my kind of pub. No tourists. No food. Personable land lady. Clean loos. Old men in jumpers!

Enjoy Richmond. Very pleasant London neighborhood to meander about.

Who/what is Ted Lasso?

Richmond Park is worth visiting if in the area. Sorry, but I have never seen the attraction of seeing where something is filmed unless the place itself has merit.

I'm a Ted Lasso fan too.

We've been to Richmond several times (2016-19) and it has a really nice atmosphere. We watched World Cup matches in a beautiful pub across from the river. Richmond is a pleasant place to walk around. And it's just outside of the spectacular Kew Botanical Gardens, which is worth a trip and a few hours.

I hoped Ted Lasso was filmed in our pub, but read last summer that the pub scenes are filmed inside The Prince's Head and that it's a 6 minute walk from the Richmond train station. Search online and you'll find it. Worth a side trip after Kew Gardens!

Clarity for our British friends. Ted Lasso is a Apple TV series. Comedy/drama created by and starring actor Jason Sudeikis The scenario is an American football ( not soccer ) coach is hired to manage a British soccer team. Show has been on for 2 seasons. Won Emmys. Many British actors and actresses in the series; Hannah Waddington, Jeremy
Swift, Anthony Head and Annette Badland to name a few.

Primary production (interior sets) were at the West London Studios in Hillingdon. The Prince’s Head pub in Richmond was used as a location.

Great question Christie! I am a big fan of Ted Lasso too. I am interested in seeing Richmond as well primarily because it looks so appealing on screen. If you go, let us know what you think please.

@loveToTravel in my reply above I noted the Prince’s Head Pub was used on the show. Production merely changed the name. Was used solely for exterior shots.

Thanks Claudia. I have never heard of Jason Sudeikis either!

I usually think of David Attenborough when I think of Richmond celebrities.

We spent a lot of time around Richmond a few years ago with our then 8 year old granddaughter. We have several pictures of her sitting on a bench eating ice cream, watching people play games on the green in the exact location where the little shops and pub lead back to the apartment where Ted lives. It’s been so interesting watching the show and seeing the familiar area on screen. One episode even featured nice scenes from the grounds around Ham House along the Thames. I highly recommend a Thames walk in the direction of Twickenham if you have the time.

@Jennifer, I do know British actor Nicolas Farrell lives in Richmond.

Only know this because we passed one another on the Thames Path in 2020. Recognizable face.

Last year went to see him with Mark Gatiss in A Ghost Story at Alexandra Palace. On the route back to Richmond saw him at Gospel Oak waiting for the train. Even with coat, hat, scarf and mask knew it was him. Approached and said “ you were very good tonight.” He said “ Oh, thank you. “

I also remember thinking dang this is a long trek to be doing nightly.

I am a fan of both the Ted Lasso TV show and of Richmond, the last stop on the District line westward.

Richmond has an important role in the mythologized history of English royalties relations with the Jewish population, hinted at in this listing:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richmond_Synagogue

It was where Solomon di Medina, the first Jew to be knighted, set up his estate. Keep in mind that there was a lot more to his involvement with European aristocracy than covered in the Wikipedia posts.

Richmond is also where Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall lived in Downe Hall,
and earlier the Stones had been the house band at The Crawdaddy in the very early '60s.

There were quite a few artsy types squirreled away in Richmond over the years:

Avirosemail it sounds like if you return to Richmond, a stroll along the Thames Path in the direction of Twickenham would be fun for you. Just as you approach Twickenham you can cross a bridge to the funky, small Eel Pie Island which has a very rich music history too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eel_Pie_Island

@Mona not sure if its a yearly event but in 2018 the Eel Pie Island artists enclave held a Christmas season open studios event. Was very fun to meander, shop and engage with the residents.

Claudia it looks like they have/had a history of open studios 2x per year, June and December. This sounds like an added enticement to visit. We are going to be in London in early August this year so will miss their “summer sale”.

OP I basically binged the show this weekend.

The pub is in Richmond, it’s the Princes Head which faces the Richmond Green. The Green was also the sight of filming. The door to his flat most likely was down Golden Court so if filming exterior of the pub and walking in the green the company wouldn’t of had to move the production trucks and trailers.

Location scouts, producers and each episodes directors would have agreed upon locations before the shooting began. The company’s desire to remain in one location and not have to move the trucks is a priority.

Thanks all. I am happy that some folks will watch Ted Lasso. One of my favorite shows of all time. It looks like the production is filming now around Richmond. From some recent social media posts, it looks like they are filming in Amersterdam too. Richmond looks lovely.

The ‘real life Ted Lasso’ is happening right now, but rather further north, as American coach Jesse Marsch tries to turn round the fortunes of the apparently doomed Leeds United (spoiler - there’s unlikely to be a happy ending).

Thank you ianandjulie for the nod to Jesse Marsch! My husband and I have followed him ever since he played soccer for Princeton University. We were sorry to lose him as the Red Bulls (MLS) coach but so proud that he (eventually) moved up to the EPL! Glad that Leeds gave him a three-year contract to prove himself (unlike what happened to Bob Bradley!)
Back to Ted Lasso which we like to watch. We'll be in London in a month and will be searching out the quaint street where Ted's flat is located. I would love to sample whatever it is that Ted makes for Rebecca. I read somewhere, but have forgotten, what it actually is and where it can be found. . .

Depending where you are staying, try taking the Overground vs the Tube to Richmond. There is an amazing ice cream place overlooking the quadrant too.

Christie,
Staying in Richmond could also include enjoying the neighbourhood 'Green', with its adjoined historic theatre. South of that, there is a well-known viewpoint looking over the river, plus Isabella Plantation, a colorful garden corner of the park. A month ago, we'd have also suggested checking out Petersham Nursery for its stylish cafe. But we've since discovered that it has become a grossly-overpriced borderline ripoff. The wealthy owner couple are pals with Jagger and apparently knew Bowie well.
'You Can't always get what you Want' and 'Ch-ch-ch Changes.'

I am done. The end.
