My husband and I will be in Hay-on-Wye in late May for the Hay Festival. We have an extra day at the end of our visit, and we would love to visit the ruins of the Llanthony Priory. We do not have a car, so wonder if it would be possible to take a taxi there and back.
I can’t profess to know about taxis in Hay but I would very much doubt that there is much provision normally given it is a small place. Around the festival any service is going to be stretched to the limit so finding someone to take you to Llanthony and bring you back could be a challenge.
The direct road between Hay & Llanthony goes over the Black Mountains via the Gospel Pass. It is a very narrow road and drivers have to sometimes reverse to passing places if they meet someone coming the other way. Go on Google Maps and find Capel-Y-Ffin and then go to street view and you will see what I mean. Even if a taxi was available, it is unlikely that anyone would wish to take you on this route and to come up from the south involves a detour of many miles.
If you have a spare day, suggest you take Sergeants bus X44 to Brecon - which takes about 35 minutes. From Brecon to Abergavenny, bus X43 goes through lovely scenery and that leg takes about 1 hour. You would have to see how the schedules match up and consider getting back to Hay.
Also consider leaving Hay a day early and going somewhere else.
Thank you for the wise advice. The trip to Llanthony Priory looked good on paper, but you have convinced me that it isn't feasible. That's good to know ahead of time.
