Taxi or Uber from Paddington or Tottenham to Waterloo Station?

We are arriving early morning after an overnight flight from Canada, so we will be groggy. I would like to stay near Waterloo Station for various reasons, but I want to avoid changing Tube lines on our first morning and at rush hour with luggage. I'm thinking about taking the Heathrow Express to Paddington or Tottenham and then taking a taxi or Uber to Waterloo. (Taxi from the airport is way too expensive).

Has anyone done this? Are taxis easy to get at either of those stations? Would the cab fare be reasonable at rush hour, or should we just suck it up and get on the next tube line to Waterloo?

the Heathrow Express to Paddington or Tottenham

Assuming you arrive at Heathrow?

I think you mean Tottenham Court Road? The Heathrow Express doesn’t go to either Tottenham or Tottenham Court Road, but the Elizabeth Line goes to Tottenham Court Road where you could get a taxi. Or take the Piccadilly Line to Hammersmith where there is an easy transfer to the District Line to Embankment or Westminster for a walk or short cab ride over the river to Waterloo. There are other ways too see TfL.gov.uk. Download the CityMapper app.

This is an example of why we don’t shorten place or street names. There’s a huge difference between Tottenham and Tottenham Court Road.

Paddington has the advantage of a taxi rank, so you can be assured you’ll be able to get a cab.

I'd just change at Tottenham Court Road off the Elizabeth Line from Heathrow for the Northern Line to Waterloo and forget a cab. It might be busy if you're coming in in the morning but after 9:30 or so it's better. What time does your flight get in? It might be about that time before you get to central London. Doing it with luggage might be a fairly minor inconvenience, depending on how tired you are.

And yes, be careful you don't go to Tottenham, lovely as it is :P

As an aside, the same thing happened to me recently talking in similar shorthand to a friend in Seattle, where we often shorten place names in the same way as here.

I was talking about going to Emmanuel [Episcopal] Church on Mercer (and between us Mercer always means Mercer Island). She immediately replied - do you mean Immanuel [Lutheran] on Mercer Street? Aside from the fact it is 3 blocks south of Mercer Street on Thomas Street that was an amusing object lesson. And yes of course I know about Mercer Street.

I would take the Elizabeth Line to Bond Street and transfer to the Jubilee line- it's only three stops from there to Waterloo. The transfer at Bond Street is a bit of a walk but it will be much faster than waiting for a cab and trying to get through traffic.

Of course, taking a taxi has the advantage that you'll end up at your destination, presumably hotel. Breaking the journey to take a cab across town when you can change at Tottenham Court Road for a Northern Line train to Waterloo seems simpler to me.

Like Golden Girl said, you'll be hailing a taxi in the street at Tottenham Court Road. You shouldn't have too much difficulty doing that. Farringdon is another station on the Elizabeth Line you could hail a cab in the street outside with a short walk. My prefered way of getting in from Heathrow would definitely be the Elizabeth Line, one way or another anyway.

If you are at Paddington the Bakerloo will take you directly to Waterloo. You could save the expense of the Heathrow Express by just taking the Piccadilly line from Heathrow to Piccadilly Circus and then it is just three stops on that same Bakerloo line to Waterloo. I've done the latter after overnight flights and it really is not bad.

Heathrow Express only goes to Paddington Station. I’ve had no trouble making my way to the taxi stand and getting a cab. My jet lagged brain just follows the black “taxi” lines on the ground.

I’ll be staying near Waterloo Station this summer and already have my Heathrow Express tickets. My plan is to grab a taxi from Paddington, because I don’t want multiple tube changes with my carry on. If that is your thought too….follow the black line at Paddington to the taxi stand.

Happy travels!!

I don’t think it’s any more difficult to change tube lines than it is to exit the tube and find and queue for a taxi. Getting the tube will be a lot quicker than a taxi. It’s very easy to change lines. Everything is well signposted. I personally wouldn’t dream of getting a taxi unless my destination was not near a station.
