SW England revised and near final itinerary

Thanks to all who have chimed in on past posts! Comments have helped to guide me to a more thoughtful approach and hope to include further away destinations in future travels.

Im getting ready to make final choices and Im feeling confident about the overall approach including public transport options but I am open for guidance on specific questions below or overall thoughts.

Old things, being waterside, cute villages, castles, manor houses, stones are my focus for this trip. Traditional museums are fine in moderation. Here we go….

Arrive into LHR

3.5 days having a Windsor Base with day trips to Windsor Castle / Eaton stroll, Oxford (so much to do but many tickets not yet released so I’m not sure how it will play out - would really like to do Castle, Radcliffe, Dukes Library, Town Tour and end with late eve punt), and Hampton Court on the third full day. I would rather base out of Oxford for a longer day visit and random strolls but feels too far out for Hampton Court. I welcome advice, confirmation, and anything I’ve overlooked.

1 full day and 2 half days in Dawlish - will be focused on Powderham Castle but will be doing oceanside walks and ferry during free time. For the ferry, it appears there are options in Dawlish or the Ferry from Starcross over to Topsham Quay could be a lovely excursion if time allows. I was waiting to see what summer options pop up and then decide what best fits into the schedule. I’d really like to get on the water for a bit however I can. Along with being on the water I enjoy walks alongside. There are only a couple a shorts windows time wise but welcome comments on the SW trail and water opportunities in that area. Well fit but keeping walks at two miles one way per walk due to time constraints. Maybe Exeter Cathedral or Museum on the way out. Leaning towards museum but open to recommendations on one over the other.

2.5 days with Salisbury base is pretty fixed due to times of transportation, openings, and tickets but welcome comments. Plan includes bus and taxi combos to visit Stonehenge inner circle at sunrise and then outer circle at sunset (will be using taxi when busses not running). Old Sarum and Cathedral between. The following day is to Avebury for a full day including a 6 mile walk. Looks like I need to be ready to return around 16:00ish. The following day I was planning to visit Wilton Manor before heading out. However it’s a late AM start with a limited 1 hour manor tour. Sounds like gardens and tea area is otherwise flexible. Curious if anyone has thoughts on this? Is it still worth the visit or it may be better to skip and go on to the next leg after an am stroll?

5 full days in Bradford-on-Avon includes a full day in Bath, a full day doing the Mad Max Cotswolds tour, a full day in Lacock, a full day to explore BOA, one day doing Great Chalfield Manor and the Court Gardens in Holt with pasture walks along the way.

While exploring BOA, I ’d like to do the canal boat to the aqueduct but times are limited and it creates a tight transition to Bath for an evening Austin at the Abbey event. Canal seems worthwhile and I can head directly to Bath via train or taxi afterwards and probably be okay with the time but if boat trip is hoaky, I’d just as soon skip that rush around. Any comments?

3/4 of a day in BOA, Bath, or anywhere along route back to LHR area hotels. I plan to arrive to area 21:00 to check in to the airport hotel and then have a late AM flight out.

I welcome all guidance and opinions.
Thanks!

By Exeter Abbey do you mean the Cathedral or St Nicholas' Priory? I'm not aware of an Abbey in the city.
In either case you want to use Exeter Central Station (trains from Dawlish usually continue to Central after St Davids) then use the new City end exit at the front end of the platforms (or bus from Dawlish).
By ferry I assume you mean the Starcross ferry as previously discussed, but I idly wonder if you mean the Shaldon ferry from Teignmouth.

PS- I'm not sure when this trip is but Exeter Cathedral have half price admission until the end of May.

Hi isn41c. Yes. Cathedral and it appears that Dawlish itself has a ferry but Starcross to Topsham is also an option if not. I will modify the post to clarify. Thanks for the corrections! By the way, this will be late June into mid July, so I expect many places to be busy.

Some time ago I found a list on Wikipedia of oldest building in England. In BOA is St. Laurence's Church from the 7th Century. Per Wikipedia "St Laurence's Church, Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, is one of very few surviving Anglo-Saxon churches in England that does not show later medieval alteration or rebuilding" I plan to visit there also on my trip later this year.

Oh. Wonderful info Celeste. I am adding that to the top of my wander day. I believe it is near my lodging. Thank you!

Re Bradford on Avon, St. Laurence's church is a very, very special place. It doesn't take long to see it, but it's so worth it. There is also a large tithe barn in Bradford on Avon...and nice walks along the canal tow path.

Wilton House is worth visiting for its magnificent cube and double cube rooms.

And Lacock (including abbey house) is a very special place.

As a matter of fact, in my den I have framed photos of Bradford on Avon and Lacock Abbey.

Sounds like a very nice trip, just two suggestions from me:

-For visiting the Radcliffe Camera, make sure you book your Bodleian Library tickets right when they go on sale (I believe it's one month in advance). You need the 90 minute tour which is the only one that includes the Radcliffe Camera. We went last month and it was totally worth it.
-If you're interested in a seaside walk from Dawlish, there's the Exe Estuary Trail which takes you up to Exeter (it's split into sections so you can do as much/little as you want): https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5bec3b321137a63605addb84/t/5c5329051ae6cf096175488e/1548953907431/Exe+Estuary+Trail+map-EEMP+2019.pdf
I haven't done this yet myself but planning to next month and from research it looks very nice.

If you will have a car, you should be aware that parking in Oxford is hard to find and extortionate. You would be best to park in one of the three or four 'Park and Ride' car parks outside the city and get the bus in from there. You can only see the Radcliffe Camera and Duke Humphrey's library in the Bodleian as part of a tour and these do get booked up. I am not a huge fan of the castle but do try to visit some of the colleges - they do not all charge for entry (Christ Church is very expensive as a result of the Harry Potter links).

If there is a sign saying that a college is closed, you can often negotiate your way in with the 'porters' who work out a small 'lodge) (ie office) by the entrance. If they still won't let you in they will turn you away very politely!
