Sunday Roast in London

Ok, so this could be a dumb question. We are moderately interested in having a "Sunday Roast" dinner, but do not want to "waste" time midday for it. Is there a place that does Sunday Roast in the evening? Also, is it basically prime rib? Served rare or medium rare? I don't enjoy well done meat.

Any other more unique meal suggestions? We'll do some Indian meals, fish and chips and probably something in Chinatown. Other than that, we're thinking of meals at pubs or salads/sandwhiches at Pret a Manger. I did notice that some of the Prets close earlier than others.

Serving times depends on the restaurant or pub. Some stop serving by six, some later.

It doesn't have to be beef. It could be chicken, lamb, mutton, pork or even a vegetarian option.

If beef, you can tell them how you want it cooked.

Lenghty but interesting intel about the tradition of Sunday roasts.

If the interest isn’t there wouldn’t go out of the way to find a place to indulge in a Sunday Roast.

I would however consider meals at Tudkin Flavors of Malaysia near Paddington Station or at The Dragon Inn in Richmond or The Dove pub in Hammersmith or the pasta carbonara at The Seven Stars Pub in Holborn.

Sometimes it's an issue of running out of the long-cooking items. Here are some recs:

I can vouch for William IV in Hoxton. We had an excellent meal there.
The other really good meal I had was at Mother Mash. I ate at the Carnaby location.
A friend recommended Hoppers, which is a Sri Lankan restaurant with several locations. I wasn't able to get to any of these during my short stay.

I would second looking at the Timeout website https://www.timeout.com/london not only for the Sunday roasts, but restaurants, pubs and other food related suggestions. They also have seasonal suggestions for sights, arts, theatre, lots of unusual local things.

But to answer your primary question, you are basically asking if there is any place that has brunch in the evening or Afternoon Tea at 6:00 in the morning. Roasts are a early afternoon thing, you very well may find a pub with a roast that has them still in the evening, but you are getting reheated leftovers, and probably less choice.

If you really want a roast, treat it like a sight in itself, find a good place, go during prime time.

As others have said, Sunday roast is very much a lunch/late lunch meal, it would be very strange to find somewhere that does it in the evening (if you think about it- by Sunday evening most people will be at home preparing for the work week). You normally get beef, pork, lamb, chicken, or a veg option- I am particularly fond of nut roast.

If you're interested in a unique cuisine there's a chain of Uzbek/central Asian restaurants I quite like, and they are also good if you are on a budget: https://www.oshpaz.co.uk/

Pret a Manger is ok but we have much better options for inexpensive meals (and these days Pret isn't even that inexpensive). If you like Japanese food, there are a few Marugame Udon locations, and those are extremely affordable. Good luck with your planning!

I tend to agree that if you want to join in with the tradition of the Sunday roast it’s best to do it between 1-3pm. That’s when the pubs will be full of other groups doing exactly the same thing and you’ll get see what it’s all about.

There are probably a few places that still have roasts available in the evening but the moment has passed by then.

a couple of points - I've never seen mutton on a Sunday Roast. I'd be interested to know who is serving it - it would be quite a treat

and if you can say how you want your beef cooked it hasn't been carved off a roast which has been in the oven several hours. I'd worry that it was pre sliced and heated to order...

OK, no Sunday roast for us, which is fine. I'm really appreciating all the suggestions for tasty meals.
