Flying into Stansted around 8:30 am and want to tour the city a bit. I want to avoid the usual touristy places, but instead want to maybe have tea and scones, walk the streets, and maybe go into Harrods just to say I was there. Any other ideas? Thanks!
Are you connecting to another flight that day, and if so, at what time and from what airport? Stansted is pretty far outside of London - to give you an idea, it would be faster and cheaper for you to get to Cambridge than to central London.
But to give you ideas specifically for London, it would help to know how much time you have.
I'm flying in from Ireland and will take the train to London. After visiting the city I will be staying at a hotel on Bath Rd near Heathrow. Not leaving until Friday. I will have one peice of luggage and a backpack with me though.
Iteland... That little known island halfway between Ireland and Iceland.
Then again, judging by the accent of my home state, maybe that's where the I-talians come from.
Thanks- corrected the typo.
If you are going to Harrods - or any large shop - on Sunday, be aware of Sunday shopping restrictions at large stores. They will only be open restricted hours on Sundays. Harrods is 12 to 6, with a half hour of browsing before the store opens at noon.
Contradiction - you want to avoid touristy places and visit Harrods! Liberty just off Regent Street is much nicer and British (unlike Harrods) and has great afternoon tea or just scones and a cuppa! A wonderful building too.
On a Sunday morning, one of the gems in London is Columbia Road Flower Market near to Old Street tube station on the Northern line. Have lunch - a curry - in nearby Brick Lane.
The City of London (business district) will be quieter at the weekend and is easily reached from Liverpool Street where your train will arrive from Stansted. St Pauls or the other churches will be open on a Sunday.
Plenty of parks to walk around, depending on the weather - Green, Hyde etc.
"I want to avoid the usual touristy places,",
Re, Hamlet's Shrink's "little known island halfway between Ireland and Iceland".
Ah, but there is such a place, and it of course Wikipedia has an article about the island here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockall
However I don't think there has ever been a posting on this forum about it.
In the same area there is also St. Kilda: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Kilda,_Scotland slighty more practical to reach.
Contradiction:=
On Sunday the Cathedral, St Pauls Cathedral, is open for worship only.
Thanks Jennifer for the suggestions. Will definitely try out some of them.
Sorry, am I understanding correctly... are you staying for 5 days? at a hotel on the Bath Road, and commuting into London each day? Heathrow is a long way from the 'good' bits of London.
Will be in London proper on Sunday. Then staying in a hotel on Bath Rd near Heathrow for a conference. Will not be going back and forth from Heathrow to the city.
Ah, not much to do where your staying, hope you don't get bored.
