Need advice on whether or not the following plan seems coherent and do-able:
We’ve been to Stonehenge before on a standard tour of Stonehenge and Avebury, had our interest piqued by stories of folks coming for free and hanging out all night to enjoy the solstice up close to the stones.
Originally, we thought we would stay in Salisbury for 2-3 nights and go from there, but we have seen the cathedral, not much else to do there, so we’ve decided will be based in London for more excitement.
The plan – take the train from London Waterloo Station to Salisbury sometime in the afternoon of Friday 20 June, try to have a bite for dinner to eat in Salisbury, then take the free Salisbury Reds bus, try to get to Stonehenge shortly after the car park opens at 7 PM, in time for sunset after 9 PM. Bring snacks, water, blankets, hang out overnight. Sunrise I think is around 4 AM or a little later, after that take the free bus back to Salisbury and the train back to London, have breakfast at our hotel and go to sleep.
It seems pretty easy because the train from Waterloo station to Salisbury is about 90 minutes, and runs pretty frequently, even early on a Saturday morning.
From what I understand, the Salisbury Reds bus that runs back-and-forth all night is free, and entry to Stonehenge is free, without tickets/reservation— Is that correct? We will book a reservation on the train from and to London. (Obviously, if there is a rail strike, all bets are off. Plus, if it seems like it will be cloudy and rainy, we will skip the whole thing and stay in London.
I assume the bus stops at the car park at Stonehenge – walk to the circle is about a kilometer or less?
So, does this seem to like a good plan? Are we missing anything? We would like Intel from anyone who knows—thanks!
