Summer 2026 -Transportation from Heathrow to London

I wouldn't discount the tube, there are two straightforward options that require no changes and they leave from directly under the airport: 1) Elizabeth line to Bond Street (plus a 15 ish minute walk) or 2) the Piccadilly Line to Green Park (with a 5 minute walk). Both similar duration most times of day, Elizabeth Line is more expensive but has newer and air conditioned cars. Use CityMapper to plot other options based on your arrival time and terminal at LHR, it shows you duration and cost for every option.

The other choice would be a National Express coach to Victoria Coach Station then a short taxi ride to your hotel.

The tube or the Elizabeth Line are both very simple: just follow the signs. This is the way the vast majority of passengers (me included) will travel, and nothing to be concerned about from a safety point of view.

We have only ever taken the Picadilly line to and from our hotels. Then a 5-10 minute walk. The Tube is empty when boarding at LHR, and we have always gotten a seat. Unless you have a massive amount of luggage, it's not a problem. Nor did I see anything that would be a safety risk. Aside from a car service or taxi, I dont think there's anything that would get you closer to your hotel.

Cost was about £100.

We took a black cab for the experience; it wasn't the least expensive option, but, like you, we didn't want to figure out public transportation after all that overnight flight and with luggage. Our driver was super nice, and he gave us some information and pointed out places of interest along the way.

The real problem with giving absolute answers like that is we don't know the date of travel (whether the line will be closed for engineering work). The same applies to the Elizabeth Line.

Likewise if there are unscheduled issues leading to a line closure- like yesterday when there was a signalling failure between Heathrow and Paddington leading to service disruption for a large part of the day.

People need to be aware of the alternatives, and have other routes in the back of their mind on the day if need be. If the Underground is down or an unplanned reason and you have to use the Elizabeth Line then there is usually an arrangement where you are only charged the tube fare on the Elizabeth Line.

The way things are going with the Piccadilly Line, I wouldn't assume anything.

On Monday, I had to get from central London to Heathrow. Normally, I take the District Line to Hammersmith, then cross the platform for the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow. (Barons Court, also used to cross the platform, was closed for renovation work on the westbound side.)

But on Monday, the Piccadilly Line wasn't running in central London. Only between Acton Town and Heathrow. So I took the District Line as usual but stayed on until Acton Town. Then transferred to the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow.

The District Line was packed. The Piccadilly Line was empty. I had an entire car to myself.

I checked, and the Elizabeth Line was giving no discount that day. But National Express added lots of additional coaches.

One last bit of advice....if you are ever waiting for an Underground train, and the platform is crowded, move to either end for the first and last cars. They are usually the least crowded. On my Disctrict Line train, people were packed in like sardines in the middle of the train. I went to the last car and got a seat.
