Suggestions on where to stay in London (landing at Gatwick Airport)

Hello

I and my wife (both early 30s) would be travelling to London for leisure for the first time. We plan to stay for 4 nights & cover all the major tourist attractions. Planning on getting Oyster cards for travel within London.

Most probably, we would land at Gatwick and will take the Gatwick Express to Victoria Station. After 4 days we will be leaving for Bournemouth from Waterloo station. So trying to find a good hotel that's near to Victoria Station and also nearby tube, while it's easy to reach Waterloo station after 4 days too.

Wondering what would be a good hotel for the stay under £120?

We would prefer chain hotels where basic things like good sumptuous breakfast (must have), located near a station or tube for easy connectivity, clean & safe rooms. Not looking at BnB, serviced apartments or hostels or boutique family-run hotels.

Kindly help

I agree with the suggestion of looking at Travelodge and Premier Inn, with a few caveats:

1) Breakfast at both of these is extra cost. At most Premier Inns, you can buy a continental or a full breakfast (both buffet style). At some Travelodge properties, the only breakfast for sale is a box, similar to what you get as breakfast on an airplane. Others have more extensive offerings. If you're willing to go outside your hotel for breakfast, a suitable place may be nearby. (I did this in York, where a Wetherspoons was across the street from my Travelodge which only had the breakfast box option).

2) Even these hotel chains may not be able to meet your price point for a property in central London. You'll see on their websites, that the farther out from the center you go, the lower the price gets. And exact pricing depends on your exact dates. Note that Premier Inn (not sure about Travelodge) has a substantial discount for a non-refundable booking.

3) Budget aside, while I certainly understand the convenience of being near one of your train stations, I wouldn't let that limit me on a four day stay. And if you aren't staying near Victoria Station, you may want to use another train line besides the Gatwick Express to get into London (for instance, there are trains from Gatwick into St. Pancras). So, look at various properties, and investigate transit connections to your stations, if the hotels around Victoria are too pricey for you.

Hampton by Hilton London Waterloo was great for us in April . I can't remember exact price somewhere around $160.00 a night of so. We liked location block and half from Waterloo station and breakfast included and you could not possibly eat everything. We were ab!e to skip lunch. Also we liked being able to get in room at 11AM with no extra charge. Busses right outside hotel.

April 2018 I stayed at the Point A Hotel about 2 long blocks from King’s Cross St Pancras. The rooms are very small but well appointed. The bed and bedding is great. No sound came through the wall. I’m 74 and was traveling alone. I felt very safe there. Very clean, too. Breakfast is extra but reasonable. There’s several Point A Hotels around London. The best rate is booking with them. One is near Paddington Station.

Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful insights. Helped me a lot to introspect and finalize Hampton by Hilton London Waterloo. I've been on multiple forums, reddit etc. But RS forum has always the most helpful, kind and amazing set of people & response. Thanks again!

Chain hotels costing under £120 and sumptuous breakfast do not go hand in hand. In fact even most of the chain hotels costing more don't provide sumptuous breakfasts, at least not what I would regard as sumptuous. Premier Inn breakfast is mediocre, Travelodge is awful, Marriott, Hilton, Accor etc offer varying degrees of quality depending on the particular brand of each company.

The best breakfasts are to be found outside hotels in London but of course this could eat into your sightseeing time unless you get up early, have already identified somewhere for breakfast and is close to your first sight of the day. Ok, it's less convenient than rolling up at the hotel dining room but if by sumptuous you mean a genuinely good breakfast then you'll not find it in a hotel in your price range.

Also, with four nights you'll struggle to scratch the surface of London, when you say "cover all the major tourist attractions" what precisely do you mean. People have been travelling to London for years and still not covered it thoroughly. I have the luxury of being able to get to Londoon Waterloo within 1hr 15mins which does permit me the luxury of taking things easy when visiting as I know I can be back at any time however, take the Imperial War Museum for example. Not a far walk from Waterloo but several hours spent exploring the museum, something to eat and then a walk back to the station and I'm looking at mid afternoon and that's just one sight.

London is absolutely crammed full of major sights, then there's the not so major, then the specialist sights and everything after that. I would say that 4 nights is barely enough to cover just a handful of the major sights in any meaningful sense.

Hi from Wisconsin,

Gatwick to St Pancrass. This would put you nearly across the street from a Premier Inn, near plenty of good food options as long as you get off Euston Rd, and you at a major transport hub.

True, only the British Library is across the street from this Premier Inn. However the British Museum is a lovely walk away through Russel Sq. Any thing else is within easy reach using the Circle Line.

Don't ignore the Br. Library because of its name. Want to see some very famous documents or letters? How about some notes by the Beattles as they composed songs? Magna Charta? Flemmings notes as he discovered penicillin? There is a cafe up the first flight of stairs or use the patio's cafe and sit outside. You must pay for the food but the library visit is free.
