I arrive Heathrow airport Sept. 4 @ 10:30 AM. I plan to take the train from King's Cross train station to Edinburgh. I'm traveling solo with small carry on suitcase & small backpack. I would appreciate suggestions on both time & cost effective choices to get from Heathrow to King's Cross train station.
Cheapest and pretty much quickest will be the Piccadilly line tube straight from Heathrow to King’s Cross- a bit over an hour and £5.60.
For a bit over double you could take the Elizabeth line to Farringdon and then Thameslink train to King’s Cross - maybe a bit quicker and more c9mfortable but involves a change.
Double again to take the Heathrow Express. Quick to Paddington but then a change to either tube or a taxi. Might just be quicker overall but nearly £30.
Tim8ng for a train - I would allow 4 hours from landing. Will probably end up with time to spare but will allow you a meal while you relax at the station.
Thanks for your reply. Your first recommendation sounds like the best choice for me since I prefer a direct route. I'm a solo senior traveler & this will be my first time navigating from Heathrow to King's station.
PJ- You will do fine. Things are clearly signed at Heathrow and you can use a contactless credit card to pay for your tube trip or get an Oyster Card if you prefer. You can "preview" catching the Tube at Heathrow by going to You Tube and watching a few videos as well.
I have done this. I took the Heathrow Express to Paddington and a taxi from there to King's Cross. This worked great for us. Being a senior with some knee issues, I avoid the Tube.
HEX is comfortable but more expensive than Tube. You also need a transfer to Kings Cross. I love HEx, but only take it when staying near Paddington. If you go this way, buy the ticket in advance as early as possible fir big savings.
I frequently stay near Kings across . I take the Piccadilly line in. Beginning of line, so seats available. As noted, easy to follow signs. Journey is about an hour. I travel with the same amount of luggage.
As someone who has taken the Piccadilly line in and out of Heathrow more times than I remember, taking the Piccadilly line is a no brainer.
You get on at Heathrow. No worry if you are on the right train. They all go to Kings Cross. It's step free access at both Heathrow and Kings Cross. (Escalators and elevators.) No changes. And considering you get on at Heathrow, you shouldn't have a problem getting a seat.
You can use any type of contactless payment--credit card or phone--if you don't want to get an Oyster Card.
It's virtually impossible to make a mistake but there will be people around to help you if you have a question. The signage is excellent.
All the other ways require a change of train and some walking between the two. Also a much higher cost.
Which terminal at Heathrow?
I'll be at Terminal 2.
From Terminal 2 take the elevator or escalator to the lower level (below ground) and take the short walk to the entrance to the Underground. Escalator down to the trains. Simple.
Just follow the signs.
I wouldn't even consider any option other than the direct Piccadilly line. Just £5.60 and under an hour. Yes, you can save a handful of minutes but it's three times the cost and the time saving relies on you walking up to the Elizabeth line a minute before it leaves.
Very easy step free options at both ends if you need them
