Suggestions for neighborhoods - 4 night apartment rental in London

Hello all! Planning a 9 day trip to London / Paris Thanksgiving week with our three children (14,11 and 8).
We have found an apartment rental for the Paris portion of our trip, but the Covent Garden rental we are interested in will not take a reservation for only 4 nights until the 6 weeks before the trip.
As I'm not finding anything else in our budget to sleep 5 in that neighborhood, what other neighborhoods would you suggest?
I see some rentals in Marlyebone and Fitzrovia...as well as Bayswater? I have zero knowledge of safety and convenience.
Safe and convenient are what I'm after!

Thank you for any suggestions of neighborhoods to help narrow down my VRBO search!

Kelly, I would suggest the flat at http://www.vrbo.com/39294. It is located at Tower Hill, which is immediately across the street from the Tower of London and Tower Bridge just beyond that. The transport links are very easy - Tower Hill tube stop is maybe 100 yards from the front door. The building has a lock to the main entrance before you enter the lobby and the door to the apartment on the top floor of the building has two separate locked doors, so the apartment itself is very secure. The neighborhood seemed very safe to us - walked around after 10 pm routinely without any cause for concern. It is a little further east than many of the main tourist hotel areas so I'm not sure it would be where others would immediately recommend, but St. Paul is easy walking distance and it is a short ride to Westminster, Big Ben and so forth. Happy travels.

Thank you for the help!
I was able to find a flat near Russell Square. It is not completely updated, but means less distance rolling suitcases when arriving from Heathrow and when heading to Paris.
I think we will be content there!
