Suggestions for car rental in London

Hello,

I will be in England in April for a week with family. We are flying in and out of Heathrow. My husband and I have been to England and stayed in London, Bath and Chipping Campden. We also visited Stonehenge. My stepson and his family would like to visit England for their April school vacation so we only have from Fri (arrival day) 4/11/25 to Sat (departure) 4/19/25.

The original plan was to go to London for five nights, pick up a rental car then go to Stonehenge and stay in Chipping Campden for three nights. Since then, my grandson has done some research and wants to see the Roman Baths in Bath. Now my thought is London for five nights, Bath for an overnight and Chipping Campden for two nights.

Ideally, we could take the train from London to Bath then rent a car in Bath. However, we would miss Stonehenge. I looked into taking the train from London to Salisbury then renting a car, however, the agencies there do not allow for one way rentals. I don't want to have a car in London so would it be easiest to return to Heathrow to pick up the car?

Thank you for your suggestions/recommendations!

What if you took the train from London to Reading; picked up a rental car in Reading, visit Stonehenge, Bath, Chipping Campden...return the car in Reading. Take the train to Heathrow.

You could go to Bath by train and stay maybe 2 or 3 nights. On one of the days in Bath, take the train to Salisbury and then the shuttle bus to Stonehenge. Before returning to Bath, be sure to see Salisbury Cathedral.

Driving from Stonehenge to Chipping Campden is a fair distance on not very good roads. I suggest you go on Google Maps and find these places and then go to street view. If you do hire a car, make sure your hotel has parking.

From Bath you don't even have to go to Salisbury on the train for the tour bus to Stonehenge, now there is the new service bus.

You can leave Bath at 0745 or 0945 on a bus #272 to Devizes, change there for the #X2 to Stonehenge, and do the same in reverse.

That X2 also extends to Salisbury, so is an alternative to the Tour Bus.

If you make the earlier start from Bath it is entirely possible to visit both Stonehenge and Salisbury in the same day without using either the train or the Stonehenge Tour Bus.

Given that there is an Enterprise rental car office in Salisbury I am surprised there is no one-way hire especially as I have just done a dummy one way booking to pick up in Salisbury on Monday and drop off at Heathrow on Tuesday

Hello!

Thank you for your responses. After some discussion, we will not visit Bath this time.

I was wondering about taking the train from London to Basingstoke. There is an Europcar located there and it would allow for a one way rental.

Any thoughts on this?

You'd need to take a taxi from Basingstoke station to the rental lot, and the town overdosed on building roundabouts, but apart from that I don't see why not.
You're straight out onto the M3, but stay on the A and B roads and you are in beautiful countryside. Jane Austen lived in the area at Steventon before moving to Bath, aged 25. See her statue in the town centre. The Willis Museum (worth visiting) is in the old Town Hall- which replaced the Mote Hall where she attended dances.
The first thing you will see leaving the station is a very busy, very modern Mall but persevere beyond that and there is more to the town. Not suggesting you stay in the town, but there is more to the area than it first seems. There is a town walking trail.

I would also suggest Arnold Clark for a car rental. I've used both Europcar and Arnold Clark in the UK, and AC wins hands down in terms of service. They are reasonably priced and take the time to explain everything to you before you sign it, which many agencies do not do (including Europcar). They are good about upgrading (I once was upgraded to an automatic at no extra cost) and another time I was upgraded to a slightly bigger car. I really can't speak highly enough of them. I will also say the same about Celtic Legend, which acts as a broker for AC. You can use either and check the prices on the quotes.

AC has a office right outside of Heathrow where you can pick it up, and then drop it off at another location. I did that earlier this year as I picked it up in Liverpool then dropped it off in Carlisle. There is an extra fee, but it's not much. They also have a location in Milton Keynes (near Bletchley Park, and on the way to Chipping Campden) where you could take the train from London to MK, pick up your car at the Arnold Clark office, and then drop it off later at Heathrow or wherever you like.
