We'll be driving on 20 June to Bletchley Park from Stow-On-The Wold (and back). Any stops along the way or short diversions to suggest? We like history, culture, food, good photo ops.
If you take the northern route via Banbury, you will come across the Banbury Cross of the nursery rhyme, and between Banbury and Buckingham you will be on the Brackley bypass (the A43 there) and at one of those roundabouts just outside Brackley, just visible from the road is the headquarters and world command post for Mercedes Formula 1, the home of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, the two men at the summit of Formula 1 (until about 12 hours from now when we will begin to see the result from Monaco). When you get to Bletchley, you are just a couple of miles, across the A5, from the world headquarters of Red Bull F1 Racing.
Either route it is a pretty blah route really, just miles of single carriageway interspersed with a fair sprinkling of roundabouts and speed cameras in awkward places.
You will know about the Rollrights, Chipping Norton, Long Compton?
I just looked up those places . . . more little nuggets to add to the itinerary.
We loved Broughton Castle near Banbury. It was definitely worth a visit. Look it up online.
As a matter of fact, the day we visited Lady Saye was there and visited with us - I hear that's typical. Also parts of Wolf Hall was filmed there.
Unfortunately it does not look like it's open on June 20.
Stow to Bletchley is likely to take the best part of 1.5 hours each way and you can spend the whole day looking around Bletchley Park, so you will not have much time for looking at other sights.
If you have time on your return trip, you could look at Waddesdon House near Aylesbury.
