Is it reasonable to take a day trip tour to Stonehenge when staying in London? Has anyone done this and are there any recommendations for tour companies? Probably going in August 23
There is absolutely no need to take a tour to Stonehenge. You just need to take a train from London Waterloo station to Salisbury, from where you can take a shuttle bus to the Stonehenge site. Don't forget to allow some time to have a look round Salisbury as well whilst you are there.
Vote #2 for taking a train to Salisbury and then catching the local Salisbury Reds bus company's shuttle out to the stones. The company picks up at the Salisbury train station and you buy your tickets from the bus driver. They call it a tour but it's not really, there is a DVD they play on the way out with some information but that is it. You pick up the shuttle bus in the same spot (times are listed) and it comes back via Old Sarum which is a nice stop if you have the time.

Now, to me, this is not a day trip to London. Yes, it can be done but there is so much to see in Salisbury I like to devote more time to it. I realize not everyone has extra time to spend away from London though.
I would NOT recommend one of the day tours that combines Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath. Just too much to see in all those areas to do on a day tour. There is a lot of riding involved on that as well.
Wow, so nice of everyone to answer so quickly, I appreciate the suggestions and will do more research on Salisbury.
The cathedral is awesome as well as the "Close" which is the area immediately surrounding the Cathedral and is walled in. There is a very nice smaller museum called The Salisbury Museum which sometimes has some interesting exhibitions. Otherwise, they have a good bit of archeological bits from Stonehenge.

I love to walk thru the Water Meadows near the Cathedral and like to visit the smaller church in the city center that has an interesting and recently restored "Doom Painting".

And surprisingly I do NOT work for the Salisbury tourist information office, hahaha! It's just one of my favorite places!
London Walks has a tour if you don't want to do it yourself. Our guide was great and we enjoyed it very much. They take you to Salisbury on the train, and then to Stonehenge by bus. Then you ride the bus back to Salisbury and train back to London.
I would absolutely take the London Walks tour of Stonehenge and Salisbury. Our guide was great and made our trip so much more enjoyable.
Another veteran of the London Walks tour here - I enjoyed it very much. I check their tour itineraries whenever I am in London and get to see places I would never have explored on my own.
