Stonehenge question

I've done some searching on this forum for advice on late entry times, but can only find recommendations on early entry to Stonehenge. So, when do all the tour buses leave? We are looking at booking a 6:00 pm time on a Sunday in July, based on the fact that we are driving from Chippingham and have Bradford-Upon-Avon, Lacock and Devizes/Rowde and the 29 Locks on the canal to visit on our way there. After visiting Stonehenge we plan on carrying on to Salisbury for the night.

So would 6:00 pm be as less crowded as first entry in the morning? Thank you!

I have no facts to back this up or firsthand experience with being at Stonehenge at 6PM on a Sunday (I've only gone in the morning) but I would imagine that, being close to supper time, there would be fewer tour buses and people in general than in the morning or mid-day?

The bus that runs to Stonehenge is called "The Stonehenge Tour" but is really just a special county bus. The last run leaves Salisbury at 4:00. That would work as that would give you time to visit the museum first, and walk to the stones rather than take the shuttle if desired. You would, however, have to arrange cor alternate transportation back to Salisbury.

Correction to the last poster, the last Stonehenge Bus tour departs Salisbury Station at 5:00 after June 5. Last return departure from Stonehenge is 7:00. But you are driving, so this is just for anyone else (like me) who is planning a trip to Stonehenge this summer.

Sorry, but you may run out of time if you are doing all this in one day. Don't shortchange the places on your list. They are all interesting.
Consider spending the night in Salisbury, and getting up early the next morning to go out to Stonehenge.
We were just there 4 weeks ago, and believe me, you want to get there early if you wish to avoid crowds. The experience of seeing the stones is 100% better with just a few people around, as opposed to large crowds of noisy people. The crowds are still there around 5:00 or 6:00.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Sounds like if we purchase the last tickets of the day and stay until closing at 8:00, it could still be less crowded if that last bus leaves at 7:00. The next morning we have tickets to Highclere, so that's out. Then we will carry on to Oxford from Highclere.
