Stonehenge by car or tour

Hi
We are staying in Bath a couple of days and have rented a car. We have also booked a stonehenge tour.

Is traveling to stonehenge okay by car or is a tour better to get good access. ?
If going by car dyou recommend rtraveling in afternoon or morning g (the tour person told us afternoon was quieter).

Thank you

Not sure about the access aspect, but we were there during the early afternoon. It wasn't overly crowded, but there were definitely enough people there that I had to pick and chose places from which to take photos with few if any people in them.

Since you have a rental car, I’d drive. There is a decent size parking lot at the visitor center. With the added flexibility you could make other stops to fill out the day. Some ideas, Nunney Castle, Salisbury, Avebury, the Cherhill White Horse, or Bradford-on-Avon.

Access will be the same whether by car or tour - unless you book one of the inner circle tours.

A great advantage of going by car is you can spend as long as you like at Stonehenge as well as doing other sites on the way. You could link this with Avebury (a very different sort of stone circle) about 50 miles north of Stonehenge and West Kennet Long Barrow a couple of miles from Avebury. This is one of the largest and most impressive Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain.
