Still trying to work on London to Liverpool

I want to take a Virgin train as it appears to be the quickest - but which is the most direct station from London? Euston? Kings Cross? Your thoughts are most welcome.

I think trains to Liverpool leave from Euston. Regardless when you check the schedule (e.g., on http://www.nationalrail.co.uk) just choose London without specifying the station and you will see any options.

The station you will likely want in Liverpool will be Liverpool Lime Street.

Virgin may call Runcorn and Liverpool Lime Street, but most of their trains are Euston - Stafford - Liverpool Lime Street only.

London Midland call Milton Keynes Central, Rugby, stations along the Trent Valley, change at Stafford on most LM services for the quickest LM service calling Crewe, 3 Cheshire stations, Runcorn, Liverpool Airport Parkway, and Liverpool Lime Street.

Also, just to avoid any confusion, there is a major station in London called Liverpool Street, but it does not serve the city of Liverpool.

In case anyone is wondering, Liverpool Street was not named after the city but for the Earl of Liverpool (the long lasting 19th century Prime Minister who had just died before the Street was built). The biggest confusion can be encountered in Cambridge where trains to Liverpool and Liverpool Street can leave at the opposite ends of the platform. Also important why you shouldn't leave 'Street' or whatever off the name of a road you need directions to.
