Still Confused About Buying Train Tickets

I know I've seen some discussions, but am still SO confused!

We are traveling from London to Edinburgh on May 30. I know that tickets go on sale 12 weeks before the trip, but I got an alert from Trainline that I can buy advance tickets now on their website. So is Trainline a broker or something? How do they sell tickets before they go on sale?

Thanks!!

Trainline is a reseller which charges a small fee.
It is quite simple, go to the company running the trains ( https://www.virgintrainseastcoast.com/ ), or National Rail which will re-direct you to the correct company.
The Virgin East Coast website says you can buy tickets "24 weeks ahead", and is currently selling tickets London to Edinburgh on 30th May starting at £25. There are two departures per hour, at 00 and 30 minutes past each hour, so you have plenty of choice.
