Hello all, it has been nearly 5 years since we have been on a plane to anywhere, much less Europe. (have been enjoying many many road trips instead, stress and worry free. We just didn't have the patience to deal with all of the lunacy, but we are happy to say we are planning a trip to London and Paris in May 2024. we plan to do it a little differently this time and fly non-stop from Phoenix to London ..stay a few nights and then take the Eurostar train to Paris. then do it all in reverse after a week in Paris with three more nights in London on the way home. What I would appreciate help with is locating an inexpensive but decent hotel near the Eurostar station which is where we pick up the train to Paris. We just think it would be easier to hop a train from Heathrow to that station and stay nearby for a couple nights before taking off to Paris. This way with all the delays and issues that have been rampant in the airline industry we don't have to worry about missing connections if our flight to London is delayed etc etc. Would welcome any advice about staying near that train station. Have heard differing accounts of what the area is like. (or would you recommend not staying near that station because of that area of the city being problematic). would love to hear from people who have actually done this. as always thanks to all of you who have helped us over the years. it's nice to be back on the forum.
Premier Inn Euston, PI St Pancras, PI Kings Cross.
All fine. Not sure where you are hearing area is unsafe.
I've stayed at the Premier Inn St. Pancras a couple of times. It's quiet, it's clean, and it's across the street from the station.
While not Knightsbridge the Kings Cross area is pretty nice. We stayed at the Premier Inn Kings Cross for a night after our Eurostar train and felt safe. They have a Waitrose supermarket nearby and some restaurants and a few pubs. Plus it's walking distance to the British Library.
King Cross was absolutely nuts when I first visited London as an adult 25 or 30 years ago. It was full of prostitution and on street drug dealing. It's fine now. It's been totally revamped and you've now got places like Coal Drops Yard that are really fancy. Euston Road is noisy and traffic infested in the daytime (and most of the night) but it's safe to be around and there's probably a few options for reasonably priced chain hotels in that area.
The 3 PIs mentioned up thread are all within a couple of blocks from Kings Cross and St Pancras. PI is a British hotel chain and provides a good product. We stayed a the St Pancras PI which is across the street from the British Library and a block from St Pancras station. These are all on a busy street, but our room facing the street was perfectly quiet. There's a pub on one side of the hotel and a Pret a Manger on the other. Several restaurants and pubs within walking distance. I certainly wasn't concerned fir my safety either during the day or late in the evening. There's lots of foot traffic.
I would second that whoever said Kings Cross is problematical is 20 or more years out of date. I can remember when it was pretty earthy, seedy and run down but that totally changed with the rebuild of St Pancras for Eurostar and then the redevelopment of the former railway lands behind KC/St Pancras.
It's totally fine round there now.
Lively, in a good way, plenty of restaurants.
I might steer clear of the area directly west of Euston due to HS2 construction work.
As others have said any of the PIs in the area will do you.
We've stayed near Kings Cross several times in recent years, and it's a nice area - no reason at all to be concerned. Having said that, London is so easy to get around you don't need to feel ties down to staying near St Pancras just because you're catching the Eurostar. We took this trip earlier this year, and we stayed in St James's - an easy trip. I can't really think of anywhere in central London I would regard as 'problematic'.
Simon is correct. Kings Cross St Pancras is a large interchange on the tube. Easy to reach from anywhere in central London really. St. James' is a short hop on my favourite tube line, the Victoria Line, from Green Park. Kings Cross is ok but not pretty and kinda grimy and noisy in places, from my purely subjective view.
WOW!! as usual, the forum comes through again! thank you all so much for your replies I will check out the places mentioned.
Even going a couple of blocks in to Russell Square or Gordon Square, into Bloomsbury, is nicer. Still within an easy walk of Kings Cross St Pancras hauling rolling luggage. I don't mean to put you off Premier Inn at Kings Cross, York Way or Euston Road. That will be fine too.
The area is fine.
Five years ago I stayed at the Euro Hotel on Cartwright Gardens, about 10 minutes walk from KC.
It was cosy, clean, friendly staff and made to order breakfast.
Since then it’s had a refresh in decor I believe, and put up the prices, but I’m staying there again soon, as I really liked it last time.
Nothing fancy, but comfy.
So convenient for the stations and central London too.
I booked it directly with the hotel, as it was more expensive through booking.com.
I can let you know how it was this trip when I get back, if you like.
That whole crescent has quite a few small hotels.
That area is not cheap for hotels, as I’m sure you pay for the convenience of the nearby stations.
However, at least now you have some recommendations of places some of us have actually stayed in and liked.
This may be a rather unhelpful response I'm afraid (to counter all the other very helpful ones 😆), but I thought it might be worth mentioning the Renaissance Hotel St Pancras if you are willing to spend a bit of extra money.
My friend from London has said it's where part of Harry Potter was filmed, the Yule Ball scene I think.
So if your lot are diehard Harry Potter fans I'd give it a go!
I have stayed at the Pullman London St Pancras multiple times. Recommend highly if right for your budget. Easy from Heathrow, then to Eurostar. Route I’ve done several times within past year or two.
From Pullman, I walk to British Museum (I enjoy walking) and several tube options from St Pancras / Kings Cross as well as regional train. Bus to Paddington. Taxi and Uber easy from hotel. The Premier Inn would have the same location advantages.
I travel solo, female. The area is fine. Usually a homeless man outside the station entrance, but not aggressive. Many commuters. I have never felt uncomfortable.
The Renaissance looks very special!
If you are okay with very basic, I stayed at the Point A Hotel London—King's Cross St. Pancras before taking a train to Edinburgh. It wasn't fancy, but I was traveling alone. The area was fine. Again, not real high-end but not at all "problematic."
We stayed at the Crescent Hotel (Cartwright Gardens) in Bloomsbury before covid (January 2019) and it was convenient to metro stations and by foot to St. Pncr., which we walked to (with luggage) a catch a train to the channel coast for an over-night stay. Several hotels are located on that curved block-long street. The hotel was not fancy (3 star) but was fine for our purpose of visiting London. Walked everywhere in combination with the tube.
