Greetings, we are planning on staying in Wallingford and using that as a Base Camp for visiting some of the local areas such as Thame, Watlington, Henley-On-Thame, Little Missenden and others. Possibly even doing a guided tour of sights used in filming Midsomer Murders. We are spending three nights. I'm looking for thoughts and comments on Wallingford as a place to stay and if there might be better options so as to maximize the time there.
Thank you!
I looked at Wallingford's location and some photos and seems to be a good location for your base camp. It is also close to Oxford which has several worthy things to visit. I've not been there, but I have stayed in Oxford, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I went to a student production of Much a Do about Nothing outside in a Cloisters. It was a little cool, but 2 fellow ladies offered part of their lap blanket! The Museums are also World Class. Bon voyage!
That would be a lot of filming locations in a lot of the surrounding villages. Since you will be going to other villages, three nights should be fine. I don’t feel Wallingford/Causton has much to offer other than walking around. If you’re an Agatha Christie fan, her house is on the edge to town and her grave is nearby, at Church Rd, Cholsey, Wallingford.
Sounds like a nice trip... I'm curious what made you choose Wallingford? It's very convenient if you like to walk, as it's on the Thames Path and just off the Ridgeway. Personally I quite like Goring which is just a bit south and Abingdon which is further up the Thames towards Oxford. One of the nicest stretches of the Thames Path in my opinion is the bit between Abingdon and Oxford, and you pass a great pub with lots of outdoor seating called Isis Farmhouse (named after the alternative name for this part of the Thames).
Thank you for the great suggestions. We haven't booked our stay yet so I will check out all the other suggested locations!
@Cat VH - my guess is the OP chose Wallingford because it serves as Causton in the Midsomer Murders series.
