We are thinking of booking an apartment on picadilly square in London. . Bad idea?
You probably mean Piccadilly Circus? It would not be my choice of places to stay but I'm old and need my sleep, hahaha!
I'd walk google street view before you decide.
IMHO a really bad idea. It is crowded, bright, loud, and you won't be able to sleep until well after 1AM. That whole area from Piccadilly all the way over to Covent Garden is quite congested and loud - I would stay elsewhere in the city unless you're a night owl.
If you mean Piccadilly Circus then I guess you can go without sleep.
Just agreeing with the others. If you do indeed mean Piccadilly Circus, staying just about anywhere else will give you a much better London experience - unless you find Times Square in New York too sedate! Not only is Piccadilly Circus noisy and crowded, but the crowds there are quite amped up. If you go to see a show in the West End, you'll be in the area; for most, that's enough contact with it.
Yes. I meant circus, and that is what it sounds like it is. We want to be within walking distance of Liecester Square. We will be arttending a play there. Any suggestions then?
Sure, the Premiere Inn County Hall near Waterloo Station.
25 minute walk to Leicester Square Or 15 minute tube ride from Waterloo to Leicester Square Station on the Northern or Bakerloo line.
Many apartments claim to be near an area when they really aren't. If you could give us an address we could give better advice.
How many nights will you be in London? If you decide on a hotel I've stayed at The Fielding near Covent Garden on a Rick Steves tour. It's a typical RS recommendation, so not many amenities. No breakfast but there are a number of places nearby that do breakfast. It's about a half a mile from Leicester Square.

As others indicate taking the Tube is very easy and it's busy at night so perfectly safe to ride coming home after the theater.
We are able to walk and prefer that if it is within 1 mile at the most we can do that. I know the tube is easy too. We just want something that is in a good location for sites and the theater. All your suggestions are helpful. Thanks!!!
I stayed at the Hub by Premier Inn Goodge Street twice in 2018, and would certainly stay here again. It's about a 20 minute walk to the West End theatres, or there's direct bus service up Tottenham Court Road. For two, you'll probably want a Bigger room (that's actually what they call it); while they regular rooms are allegedly for two, they'd be very tight.

You can stay at the Premier Inn at Leicester Square and be near the theatres. I checked into this hotel and everyone on the forum liked it as well as trip advisor. I did decide to stay at the Luna Simone Hotel in the end. But that is my suggestion if you want to stay in the theatre district.
