I'll be in the London area and am looking for a quaint town to stay in the night before I head home. I'm leaving from Gatwick and would like a town East or Southeast of the airport - no more than 45 minutes away. I'll be traveling with my wife and 2 kids (21 & 19)

I stay in Brighton. It does have a different vibe to it but I like being on the coast. I am not sure if it fits your definition of quaint. My 12 year old son loves Brighton Pier. The train to Gatwick is only about 30-45 minutes.
I live in Brighton. A great town but I don't think anyone would describe it as quaint!
Lewes is a good idea though. A nice centre, a small castle, a river, a brewery, some nice pubs.
If you can stretch your journey time to around 50 minutes Arundel is another possibility.
