Southwest trains ticket question...

So, on Sept 3, we are travelling from Chiswick (CHK) to Portsmouth/Southsea (PMS). Southwest is showing cheapest ticket price of 31.10#. I was doing some noodling about as the next day we are going back into Lon Victoria. What I discovered was we could go from CHK to VIC for 4.10# and then VIC-PMS for 8# - of course, these are at certain times of the day, so I know it is a specific time train. So with a savings of almost 40# for the two of us, I'm very tempted to do this. I'm not worried about it taking a little longer if I can save the equivalent of $60-70. The return trip from PMS to VIC is showing as 10# cheapest.

So, my question is for those that know about the trains - will these prices be available on the day we travel, or should I purchase the tickets ahead of time? My niece in Portsmouth says she's never seen prices of 8# to PMS from London (then again, maybe she's never checked going from VIC). Is there a glitch in the Matrix? Am I missing something very important but obvious? (OK, I am noticing the cheaper tickets are with Southern and the more expensive are a combo of Southern and South West...difference?)

Some background - we are going to Portsmouth for only one night to visit my sister and collect my mother. We are going back to London Vic on the 4th as I have tix for the Gatwick Express from there to catch our flight to Italy. Initially, my mom was going to take the bus and we weren't going to go to Portsmouth, but she was too worried about messing up the bus, and by then I had already purchased adv tix for the Express (3 for the price of 2!), hence the overnight to Portsmouth.

There are two routes to Portsmouth, a faster one run by South West Trains from Waterloo and a slower one by Southern from Victoria.

I suspect that the low fare you have found is a special advance fare, so if you want it book it. It may well limit you to specific trains, though.

It's a pity that you already bought Gatwick Express tickets, as the route from Portsmouth to Victoria passes through Gatwick Airport.

I don't mind it being a little longer if it means saving $60! Wish I had know that about the return going to gatwick, but I am hoping we'll get to London around 1 pm, don't have leave for the airport until about 3-3:30 so hoping to give my mom a quick spin around the area...she's been over I think 4-5 times, but has never seen anything of London...imagine!

I will def have to check into prepurchasing then...thanks

Megatrain, as mentioned above, is sort of the RyanAir for trains. Very low fares but all sorts of regulations which can cost sorely if you don't act within them.

All other domestic trains you just pop onto the platform a few moments before the train leaves and jump on.

Megatrain you have to check in (after finding the check in desk) quite a long time ahead of boarding - often 15 minutes - and you must not board or leave the train at any station other than what your ticket says.

One or more carriages are dedicated to Megatrain in the train, and you have to remain in the assigned carriage for the whole journey - as if the rest of the train didn't exist.

I was checking Megatrain and the really cheap fares seem to be very early, and I could only see trains up til noon-ish - not sure if I missed how to see later in the day ones, or if there weren't any - and I am not a Ryanair fan - and it sounds like there are some hoops to jump thru - I don't mind a little bit of nuisance, just not a tremendous amount...and no way can we be into VIC by 7-8am for the cheap fares.

Megatrain is the vehicle that the Souter organization which run East Midlands Trains and Southwest Trains amongst others, uses to fill otherwise likely empty seats. They are rare or non existent for popular trains.
