How far do you want to drive? What kinds of things do you want to see? Is Wales an option? Do you speak English with some fluency?

A little help, please.

Clifton and its cool suspension bridge is not too far. You can visit Bath and Cardiff too.

I would head over the Severn Bridge (M48) - NOT M4. Go to Chepstow & see castle, then A466 up the Wye Valley to Tintern (ruined abbey). Yat Rock viewpoint is further NE - if you can find it.

Do you mean what to do as a day trip from Bristol? If so, you have a wealth of choices. In addition to the above: North coast of Devon-Exmoor, Lynmouth, Clovelly. South coast of Devon-Branscombe, Seaton, Lyme Regis. Bath, Stonehenge, Salisbury. The Cotswolds-Broadway, Chipping Camden, Bourton-on-the-Water.

You already have some good suggestions, but there is so much to see in this area that it all depends on what interests you. My additions to the list would be Tyntesfield (Victorian mansion outside Bristol), Wells, and sites in South Wales such as St Fagan's.

Parking in both Bath and Bristol, especially long term parking, is expensive, and many hotels do not have their own car parks. Make sure that you include the cost of parking when comparing hotel prices, and also look at where hotels are sited. If you are staying in Bristol, it would certainly be an advantage to stay in the central area so that you can walk, or take a bus, to the various attractions.

You have quite a few day trip options (and many have already been recommended). I recommend Bath but I personally would take the train here so you don't have to deal with parking. You could push out further with the car and explore parts of the Cotswolds, visit Stonehenge, explore south Wales, etc. You can get some ideas on what many of these areas offer by watching Rick's Videos.

We really enjoyed the Avebury stones (a little north of Bath). You can sign up for an informative tour, walk around the stones and touch them, etc. Adjacent to this is the interesting Avebury Manor, where each room has been recreated for a different era. We also enjoyed walking around Lacock Village. In Bath, be sure to take the free city tour, on which you'll see the highlights and get lots of history information. The Roman Baths tour can easily take 3 hours or so and the audio tour is wonderful.
