Southeast England base?

Is Canterbury a good base for 4-5 days in southeast England relying on public transit? Looking ahead to a likely spring 2026 trip with my 70-year old mother, where we'd like to see some things like the White Cliffs of Dover/Beachy Head, walking along the South Downs Way or other walking route, visit a "charming" town or two like Rye, and generally just be out enjoying the nature (also will be spending a few days in London. We've decided that for both our sakes renting a car is probably not the best idea-even though I'd be the driver, she's a very anxious passenger when we're driving on the right side of the road, so best just let others do the driving who are used to it. Open to other suggestions as well!

I think Canterbury is too far east for Beachy Head and the South Downs. From memory, all of the remaining railway lines run into London rather than along the coast. You might be better off in Eastbourne (a Victorian seaside resort which is ok but has seen better days) and take buses from there
