Two of us are in need of a hotel in Southampton in August for a few days. I have been looking at the Mercure Dolphin and Jury's Inn, the former being only slightly more expensive than the latter. Can anyone comment or offer other suggestions?
We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Southampton (by Mayflower Park) before a cruise last summer and have reservations to stay there this year before a cruise as well. We found it comfortable and convenient. Views over the water were good as was the service. If you have time while there, we recommend a trip to Portsmouth. We took the train from Southampton and spent the day there - lots to see. We especially liked the Spinakker Tower and the D-Day museum.
Thank you, Bonnie. I'll check out the Holiday Inn. Portsmouth was one of our planned outings, by the way. I have been there but my sister has not.
Norma , I have not stayed at that particular Mercure , but have used them often on my trips and always found them to be predictably comfortable and reliable . I have no doubt that the Southampton location would be of similar quality .
Thanks, Steven. I like the fact that the building itself is 500 years old!
You could also take the train to Salisbury to see the medieval cathedral. A shuttle bus runs from Salisbury to Stonehenge.http://www.visitwiltshire.co.uk/explore/salisbury-and-surroundings
Winchester, is also worth a visit. http://www.visitwinchester.co.uk
Good suggestions, James. Winchester I know very well, but Salisbury would be a new place to visit.
