Southampton to London at peak time

Hi! The train to London from Southampton to catch our 10:30 am Eurostar, at St. Pancras, on a Monday (June 6, 2016) is $248 for two people!!!!. I paid LESS for the Eurostar tix to Paris! I am told it is due to it being peak time. Any other ideas of how to get into London by, let's say 9:30 am, that might be cheaper? Thanks!

Where are you seeing that fare? When I look up the journey on http://nationalrail.co.uk, I'm seeing an anytime fare of GBP 40.50 per person, or about $120 US for two.

But if you want a cheaper option, you could take a National Express coach (http://www.nationalexpress.com). There's one that leaves Southampton at 6:00 and gets to London at 8:50. Fares are currently GBP 5.00 per person.

Without offering any advice on cheaper way to get to St Pancras, I think you should change your Eurostar reservation to a later departure. For a 10:30am Eurostar you will, as you say, need to arrive at the station by 9:30am. The train journey (have not checked) will be well over an hour plus time to get from ship to train station by taxi, plus time to find your luggage in the pick-up shed. So that means you need to disembark probably by 7:30am or so, which, if not impossible, is highly unlikely. I have twice disembarked at Southampton and the only passengers who were able to leave the ship before 8:00am were those with carry-on luggage.

I saw that rate at trainline.com. I will definitely look up the link you provided. The reason I chose that time of day was to get to Paris as early as was feasible, to use as much of the day as we can. We are only going for 3 days, 2 nights, and those are not full days.

A flight from Southampton Airport to Paris costs less than £50 a person on that day at present.

Don't forget that as well as the ticket to London you will need to pay for the cross terminal transfer.

Don't use the Trainline, they are a reseller and add fees. Buy from the train operating companies, if you don't know which one, use the national rail website and it will transfer you to the appropriate website to buy tickets.

To khbuzzard - Was that a round trip price you saw for $120/person? Was that on first link you provided?

To Marco - On what site are you seeing less than 50 pounds? (Sorry - I'm in the States - don't know where the British pound sign is on my keyboard.) I am on ebookers.com and see nothing less than 93 pounds round trip.

thanks for helping to everyone who has replied!!

Flybe for Southampton to Paris (both CDG & Orly).

When I looked last night there were 3 seats for £48.49 on 6 June to CDG, although now there is only one left. If you wanted checked luggage and reserved seats it is £72.49. The next price point is £53.99 and £77.99 respectively.

^^ No, what I quoted were one-way prices. It wasn't clear from your post that you were looking for a round trip.

Anyway, if the Eurostar tickets are already paid for, the cheapest way to get to London is to take the coach. From Victoria coach station to King's Cross/St Pancras is then just a few stops on the Underground's Victoria line.

"..... the cheapest way to London is to take the coach". This may be true but getting to St Pancras by 9:30 will be impossible in my view, whether by coach, train or taxi. Best to pay whatever it costs to change the Eurostar booking to a later departure. Or abandon the Eurostar altogether and fly, as has been suggested.

It's only "impossible" if you're disembarking from a cruise that morning, which anneall never specified that they were. Otherwise, getting up early enough for a 6:00 AM coach (or a 7:00 AM train) may be unpleasant, but it's definitely within the realm of possibility. I'm just trying to answer the question that was asked.
