Southampton/London/Windsor/Cambridge -- too complicated?

Obviously, the answer is yes or else I wouldn’t be here looking for advice! So please steer me in a better direction.

Background: next June, my husband and I will take a 14-day Princess cruise roundtrip from Southampton to Norway (bucket list!). Flying in a day early and taking the National Express to Southampton. Upon our return June 29, we head to London for 3 days before flying out of Heathrow July 3.

Here’s where I’m getting bogged down. There are 3 things we want to do this time around (we spent 8 days in London in 2019 so we did a ton of sightseeing then): See Stonehenge. Visit Windsor Castle. Visit IWM Duxford.

I realize none of those are in London! My tentative planning doesn’t seem to make best use of our time – and do we even need to be based in London? On the other hand, we don’t want to be moving every night from hotel to hotel. What I have is:
1. Saturday: Book a transfer from the cruise ship to our London hotel with hopefully a Stonehenge stop on the way
2. Sunday: ?? Thinking about visiting the British Museum since we only skimmed it before
3. Monday: Take the train from London to Windsor (the castle is closed on Tues/Wed and St. George’s Chapel is closed on Sundays)
4. Tuesday: Take the train from London to Cambridge and hire a taxi to get us to IWM Duxford, return to pick us up there & go back to Cambridge, and return to London Tuesday evening
5. Wednesday: Take the Piccadilly line to LHR for our morning flight

I’m a little nervous about being away from London the day before we fly home so that’s playing into this as well.
Thanks for your advice and expertise!

Well there is no need to be nervous about having a day out of London on the Tuesday in June/July. There are 2 different railway lines from Cambridge to London (to Kings Cross and Liverpool Street) and also National Express run from Cambridge to London, so it is inconceivable at that time of year that you could get stuck in Cambridge.

But if you wanted to then you could do Duxford on the Sunday and the British Museum on the Tuesday to alleviate that.

The British Museum might be a bit less crowded on a Tuesday; it will still be awful, though, especially the ground floor.

The train trip from Kings Cross to Cambridge is under an hour. I don’t think there is much to worry about when you are doing this as a day trip.

I think your plan looks fine.

Thank you all for your information and reassurance! It makes so much sense to switch the days for IWM Duxford and our "light" day on Sunday. I really appreciate it.

I'll likely be back later on to discuss trains and timing as we get closer to departure. Thanks again!

I took a similar cruise last summer and the scenery was amazing. I know you will have a great time.
