I will be spending three days in England in early October, arriving at Gatwick and taking the train to Cambridge, then York for an overnight stay. Would appreciate recommendations for the return trip, traveling more to the west visiting recommended highlights with one (quaint) overnight stop before heading on Heathrow and home. Thanks.

You are (I assume) wanting to return to London by train. The issue is that York is on the main line to London, only two hours. You are already taking the slow route up by detouring and stopping at Cambridge. Any other westerly route back would be longer and slower.
If you want quaint, I suggest Whitby. This is North-East of York, on the coast. There are regular buses from York to Whitby. Timetable here: http://www.yorkbus.co.uk/cmsUploads/route/files/coastlinermayttweb2.pdf
Or hire a car for one day and drive to Whitby, stay overnight and drive back and then catch a train from York.
