some rail strike progress

The union have just accepted the offer from Network Rail so their strikes are now over.

The 14 railway companies are still under strike and at the moment their strikes will still go ahead but all the signallers and other Network Rail workers will be at work.

keep checking

We will be in Scotland in May and have train tickets to depart Edinburgh for London on May 31st. I read this is a date there may be a rail strike - says action by ASLEF Union. Just wondering if you have thoughts on how concerned we should be and if we need a plan B. Renting a car is very expensive (family of six) and a good 7 hour drive. I plan to look into flights so appreciate any advice on hopper flights - assume these would fly into a London airport other than Heathrow. We have theatre tickets that night so hoping to get to London!

Easyjet that day have 5 flights to Gatwick, 3 to Luton, 2 to Stansted, Ryanair have 3 flights to Stansted, and there are probably others.
BA flights are very expensive on this route, to Heathrow, Gatwick and London City.
I would also look into flying from Glasgow- BA flights are usually far cheaper from GLA than EDI (edited- this time EDI flights are cheaper than GLA!- with the best fares, also unusually, to LCY which is easy access to the DLR into London- 20 minutes into Bank station)

Lumo trains are not involved in the strike- they are currently showing one train that day, and have predictably put their prices way up to £75 each.

This is ASLEF (the drivers), not RMT.

The word is that this may be more disruptive than a RMT strike day- and if you wait until train timetables are confirmed between 4 and 7 days beforehand you may find the flights sold out.

So I think I would look at one of the above flights.

Thank you for your reply. Looks like I need to research where these other airports are located and get something booked!

JW65- Bearing in mind that you are doing this because of the rail strike London City is the best choice as the DLR will not be affected.
Then Luton. As well as the train Luton has frequent National Express coach service to both London Victoria and London Paddington, which coaches have a number of London stops which may well be close to your hotel, or provide tube connection. Also a different Green Line coach service to Victoria again with a number of central London set down points.
Then it's a toss up between Gatwick and Stansted. Both have Nat Ex coaches into London as well as the train, and both are a similar distance.
I would probably go for Gatwick over Stansted as there are greater options other than trains, but it's a close call.

Nigel
So does that mean the May 13th strike will not occur or is it the May 12th strike?
We are supposed to be on a train on May 12 from London to York. Just trying to figure out if we should go on the 11th instead.
Thanks for the info

Karen....sadly, someone piggybacked onto this thread and now it's confusing. As of my writing this, the strikes on May 12 and 13 are still on. The agreement Nigel wrote about was in March and has nothing to do with the upcoming strikes.

this is an old thread. The Network Rail bods are back at work but at the moment both the 12th ASLEF drivers strike and 13th RMT everybody else strike are both happening. If they get called off I will be the first to yeehaw and post.

Karen, I’m in the same boat as you—I have tickets for that LNER train from York to Edinburgh. I’m waiting for now to see what the revised schedule will look like. I’m hoping to leave York on may 12th or 13th. From what I’ve read here on the forum and on-line, some of those LNER trains should run during the strike.

Okay. Thanks for clearing that up!
I will keep checking here and on LNER website for, hopefully, some good news.
Good luck to you as well Carrie!
