Small village not far from London as a walking base?

Can anyone recommend a nice village within 2 hours (by train) of London with good walking paths nearby? We prefer hill walking, but an attractive town on the Thames Path would do as well. We are not interested in the Cotswolds.

Thanks!

Thank you, Emma. Those links are very helpful, and I see they have recommended walks from Henley-on-Thames, one of our favorite places.

But I am trying to find someplace farther out of London to spend three nights; it could be any direction but north might work best.

Oh yes, we would be prepared to use cabs if necessary to reach a good walk. Do you have any suggestions for nice villages in either the Peak District or West Yorkshire?

Hi Lola -

A little over three hours would get you to the Yorkshire Dales via Leeds.

Grassington is a good base for the Yorkshire Dales but is not served by rail - Ilkley or Skipton would be closest rail stop I believe and there is an infrequent bus service.

Malham is a real walkers honeypot, and for good reason, also in the Yorkshire Dales. Nearest rail link is Gargrave which will get you within six or seven miles. However again trains are not that frequent. There is a bus link in summer to Malham from Gargrave, again not especially frequent. A taxi would be an option for the short distance, or if you are backpacking a largely riverside stroll up the Pennine way links the two places.

Left to my own devices, I'd go with Malham every time.

Have a great trip wherever you choose!
