We have 4 days in our itinerary that we would like to add. We are looking for a smallish town or village that is 2 hours or less by train or bus (we will not have a car) from Heathrow, and that is very pleasant for walking around in so to us that means less cars wizzing through and a quieter atmosphere but also some things to do such as old churches to visit or museums and maybe some gardens or parks to visit.
Also not one of the places we have already visited or will be visiting, so not Bath, York, Salisbury, Winchester, Canterbury, Oxford or Cambridge.
Thank you for any suggestions!!

+1 for St Albans, which is a very lovely old city (technically, because it has a cathedral, but with much more of a 'town' feel).
There's a nice market, not to mention St Albans Abbey and the Verulamium Roman ruins.
