Small Group Day Trip to Stonehenge and Windsor

I am trying to find a small group (not huge bus) day trip from London to Stonehenge and Windsor Castle on the same day in late September There are big bus tours- Evan Evans, Golden Tours- but those have an alarming array of good and REALLY bad reviews. We prefer to just see those two sites, though it's hard to find given most day tours want to add a third site (Bath or Oxford or...) Any ideas? We have a very full itinerary in London and were looking forward to relying on someone else to take us around for a day! And again, would prefer a smaller group. Does this exist without it being private and extremely expensive?

We just used Mad Max in early May. Great tour of Stonehenge Avebery, and Cotswolds'. We got to Stonehenge early, and we he photos with out any other people in them! They use a van that holds about 16, [email protected] is the email we used to make reservations.

This does not answer your question but…. I would not combine these sights. (And agree with NOT adding a 3rd site!!)

You can easily do either on your own by train (plus local shuttle for Stonehenge) but not combined.

Each of us travels differently but for me both of these sites need 3/4 of a day to see adequately. I am a fairly detailed person so like to see everything I can at sites. At Stonehenge I like to walk back to the Visitor Center via the Cursus and burial cairns. At Windsor I like to see everything that is open for view!

Your idea of touring may be different from mine.

Thank you all. I am reconsidering our strategy based on your perspectives.

To add on to Pam's good advice.....It's easy to take the train from London (Waterloo station) to Salisbury, then take the Stonehenge Bus from the Salisbury train station to Stonehenge.
This way you can spend as much time around Stonehenge as you like, and not be rushed.
The Stonehenge Bus will take you back into Salisbury to the train station. Or to the town square near the Visitor Information Center, if you want a walk around Salisbury (and a visit to its famous lovely cathedral) before you leave.
Then it's a fast train ride back into London.

To comment about Windsor.....If you're departing from Heathrow airport at the end of your trip, it can be a good idea to stay in Windsor the night before your flight.
This gives you time to arrive by train from London, drop your bags at your Windsor hotel, then see the castle and have a walk around the town.

Windsor is very close to Heathrow, so on the morning you check out of your Windsor hotel, you can take a taxi to your terminal for your flight. (20 minutes) An inexpensive ride. We paid 20 pounds several years ago, but it will be perhaps double that now.

I am making the assumption here that you might be flying out of Heathrow, as so many visitors do.
If you are not,
Windsor is still easy to do as a day trip from London on your own.

I'm afraid I can't help on a small group tour, but I do have friends who took the Golden Tours Stonehenge and Windsor Castle tour last September and enjoyed it very much. I just asked her, and she said she would have no hesitation recommending them. Our friends were in London with another couple for just 3-4 days before leaving on a cruise to Iceland, and like you had a very full itinerary, but wanted to see those 2 sites without adding Bath or some other place. It was a long day, but they were glad they did it.

Thank you everyone for your input. Typically, we prefer doing all of our own planning and making our way to places on our own. But in this case, we are looking for someone else to "take the wheel" for just a day to see these two places. I am grateful to the person who asked her friends about their experience doing this Golden Tour and getting the thumbs up! That is nice to hear and encouraging. I'm inclined to go ahead the book this for us. It literally seems like the only company offering just these two sites in one day. Again, I appreciate everyone's thoughtful comments.

Also, we head to France from here and won't be leaving out of Heathrow.... The idea of going to Windsor at the end on way to Heathrow was great! We just won't be heading that way...
