Sleeping in South London

My wife and I are returning to London for a long weekend in August after a few years away. Sadly, our usual home-from-home, The Vicarage Private Hotel, is closed. (Sniff!)

I am looking at a couple of Travelodge Waterloo & TL Southwark in South London. They are located between Waterloo Station and near the Imperial War Museum. The Tate Modern & Borough Market are not far and transit connections are good. The price is right as well. Online reviews of the properties are positive.

Any thought about this area a place to base?

That's not what most folk would consider "Souf London".

Croydon, South Croydon, Morden, Peckham, Thornton Heath - that's South London.

You listed places in central London, just a touch over the River.

Those Travelodges should be fine - but I might go up a little step to Premier Inns.

I said I would step up a level, not that everybody should. I prefer the rooms and beds at Premier Inns, Ibis and Holiday Inn Express.

Nothing wrong with the Travelodge and many people use them happily, some on this board (Susan and Monte, are you tuned in?); that is just my preference.

We often stay at a Premier Inn. Usually County Hall but the last time in Southwark. I think I like Southwark better.

They all have a restaurant associated with them and the Anchor in Southwark is infinitely more diverting than the restaurant at County Hall.
