Sites near Gatwick

Will be flying out of Gatwick at 6:00 a.m. and so will be staying nearby for a day. Any recommendations as to potential sites in that area in October?

There are quite a lot of yummy National Trust properties relatively nearby, but they are inconvenient without a car.

In October the Acers and other colourful trees there will be peaking.

On the other hand, by Gatwick Express central London is only half an hour away. When we stay at Gatwick we usually run up into London for dinner. Everything at the airport is seriously blah.

Take the train from Gatwick down to Brighton - walk along the sea front, visit the over the top Royal Pavilion, explore the Lanes. Have an early dinner in Brighton and get the train back to Gatwick.

Two recommended reasonably priced places to stay at Gatwick are the Premier Inn or the Courtyard by Marriott both are served by Hoppa buses (there is a charge so make sure you have some pound coins). The Courtyard is about a 10 minute walk from both the train station and the south terminal. If you are going from North Terminal you need to take the shuttle train between terminals or stay at the expensive Sofitel which has direct acess to the North terminal.
