Do you think London is a good location for a single woman? How difficult is it to find tours to many of the historical locations?
V easy. Google for tours. London walks is a good one.
Most if not all of London Walks' tours are outdoor walking tours. They're good for getting a feel for a neighborhood and some historical background. And if you're traveling alone (as I do, and for very long periods), the human contact can be welcome.
If you're specifically looking for a guide to take you through historic buildings and/or museums, I think you'll need to go elsewhere. A lot of sights have audioguides, though, and I've generally found them to be good.
Are you interested in specific types of tours? There are probably some folks here who can make suggestions if they have an idea of what you're interested in.
London is a great location for a single woman on vacation. It is not difficult at all for you to find your way around using a good map. The sights are easy to find and transportation is by tube, bus or walking. Most sights have either an audio tour inside or the museums are do-it-yourself, read the plaques/signs that go with each painting or artifact.
What historical locations did you have in mind for which you want a tour?
A good location? I guess it depends on your interests. It's as good as any, and better than some.
Theres not much need of a tour just to get to a sight inside London. A bus or the Tube will get you pretty close to most of them. There's little need for a tour guide inside most of London's historical sights. As stated, many have audio guides or have their own tours that start at specific times. Check the websites for the sights you are specifically interested in, or you can ask specific questions here.
Well, I love going to London on my own! There is so much to see and do that each visit altho I cross some things off I seem to add a dozen more sites! As others have said, give us an idea of what you want to see and we can help you with how to get there.
I am a big advocate of the London Walks. I did 3 this last visit in the Fall. I have always wanted to do one of their day trips as I am sure they are of the same quality as the shorter walks in London.
There are also plenty of hotels that will work for you. I like to stay at a smaller hotel with a 24 hour reception desk. I want the hotel to collect the keys when you leave so they know you after you've been there a day or so!
This will be a fun trip!
London is an excellent location for solo travel for both women and men alike. Finding a tour in London is as easy as finding a tour anywhere in the US. Is this your first time traveling?
Go on line to destinations you wish to see and look up tour schedules on their respective websites. I've had no problems in finding them in palaces, castles, museums and cathedrals/churches/synagogues.
I would say London is an ideal location for solo-traveling women. I've never felt unsafe or disconnected while visiting there alone. Tours are not difficult. Start with the RS guidebook to get your interests/priorities set on what you'd like to see. Then, separate the places you'd like to self-guide and either Google or follow the RS suggestions for tour options.
I agree with all of the above, though it doesn't look like OP has been back. I went to London in Oct w/ my dtr and am returning in a few weeks as a solo traveler for another short stay- arrive on the 4th and depart on the 8th. I want to take advantage of the learning curve around public transport and my other planning. This board and RS book were so helpful! I had an excellent time w/ my dtr but now I will see some of the other things that I wanted to see. I'm already regretting not making it a longer trip. I'll prob do London Walks again, mooch around some parks, National Gallery and Brit Museum again. I have a friend who has offered to take me around Oxford where she lives which would be amazing but not sure if I can live with regret of not seeing more London!
Jody, I urge you to take your friend up on her offer. Oxford is very interesting, and it has two fine museums of its own. London isn't going anywhere, but your friend may not be in Oxford forever. (I say this as someone who spent 10 days in London in September, which was definitely not long enough.)
Thanks for the insight re Oxford, I shall consider!
Jody, You didn't say if your friend in Oxford was also going to put you up but If that's the case jump at it. Besides which, Oxford is lovely.
No I won't stay over in Oxford but would probably end up spending one of my three "full" days there if I go plus dinner with the family. She's a long time "online" friend who I just met when we went over in Oct and she drove into London and met us as and we wandered around South bank and had a meal. I think the major flaw in my plans was not making a longer trip!! I'm staying at a hostel and just doing carry on via Norwegian. I'm less than 600 dollars so far for lodging and flight- keeping it cheap and cheerful! Hostel is Barmy Badgers Backpackers- had excellent reviews on hostel site and I'm in a 4 bed female dorm. IDK, maybe there is a world traveler in me somewhere!
This single woman has done London twice with no problems and enjoyed it immensely. Looking forward to a third visit at some point in time.
