Single 35 yo female flying into London help...

Hi,

I've planned kind of a last minute, fly by the seat of my pants 2 month trip to Europe. I'm starting off in England and planning to explore Ireland and Scotland first as well before I travel over to Spain and Italy. I've got guidebooks and have started some last minute researching since I'm leaving next week, but now I think I'm just confusing myself more. Any recommendations on a good area of London to start off staying in that is kind of central to main sites or the tube so I can venture out I guess on some day trips? (planning to try out hostels for the first time to save on money so any good recommendations would be wonderful). I'm sure there are some other threads I can read about great places to visit. And also any help on best/easiest way to travel to either get to Scotland or Ireland after I explore London and some surrounding areas would be great as well! Thanks so much!

Emma,

Thank you so much. I did need a little fire lit under me. I used to be such a planner and I guess I need to get some of that back. I booked at barmy badgers which seems to have fairly good reviews and looks like in zone 1 near Earls Court station for 4 nights and then will start to venture out to some other cities. Thank you for the info on the travel card and train to Scotland.

A couple of thoughts. University dorms/apartments can be an inexpensive summer housing option in London. The London School of Economics has a website with their offerings; you could check there. And skyscanner.com is a good resource for discount air fare, but buy as early as possible since fares go up as date gets closer (also true of many train fares).

University of Westminster and University of London also have student housing. I have been perusing this heavily for a trip to London next year. All have dorms with en suite options or shared bathrooms. London school of economics also has free wifi in their rooms.
