Short trip from london to cornwall

I am coming to the UK the first week in June and get out of meetings Wed at 5. I am taking off Thur and Fri to do photography in Cornwall and fly out of Heathrow on Saturday early afternoon. I am somewhat comfortable driving but dont want to drive in London due to the heavy traffic.

I assume i will need to rent a car once over there.

thinking of taking the train to Exeter on wed, find a place to stay then rent a car and drive around cornwall. Not sure on the return.

Looking for suggestions on travel and places to shoot. I like landscapes.

Much thanks in advance!

Much thanks.

Might also Check if FlyBe has a flight that night.

As far as what to shoot I’m a photographer and use Google Street View as well as look at various links about where I’m going.

Helped me figure out I’m photographing the Mousehole Harbor Christmas Lights this year.

Whether you travel by car or train, it takes most of a day to get from London to Cornwall. It simply is not worth such a long journey for the time you have available. Trains > www.nationalrail.co.uk (You may like to consider taking the ‘Night Riviera’ sleeper train to try and increase your time in Cornwall).

Hi Paul -

You might check to see if you could fly out to Newquay from London (or nearby) on Wednesday evening and return to London on Friday evening from there. It has the advantage that it is in Cornwall while flying to Exeter means you still have a long way to get to Cornwall, mainly because the roads are slow going from Exeter. Rail links are not extensive either. Also I wouldn’t want to try getting back to London from Cornwall on the same day as my flight home. I don’t think any sensible Brit would attempt that - Cornwall is pretty remote to get to and from, even if it looks otherwise on the map!

You’ll need to check on accommodation too if the flights are a ‘goer’ - Newquay and environs are a popular holiday destination for Brits and the holiday season will be ramping up in June. Many Brits are planning ‘staycations’ this year (Brexit to blame apparently) so you might find yourself in a ‘beggars can’t be choosers’ situation.

Still, hope you can fathom the logistics and have a great trip!

You need to be back in London Friday night, as you will have to be at the airport 3 hours before your flight, so presumably mid morning.

Why go all the way to Cornwall for such a short time? There are many good landscapes closer to London.

Some alternative ideas - Rye/ Pett Levels/ the unique Dungeness/ Romney Marsh.

The South Downs - Lewes/ Ditchling/ Rodmell/ Alfriston/ Jevington.

The New Forest. Spot the wild ponies.

The West Dorset Heritage Coast - between Portland Bill and Lyme Regis.

The Essex/Suffolk borders - picture postcard villages such as Finchingfield, Lavenham and Long Melford.

Constable country - Dedham Vale plus the coast between Orford and Southwold.

Agreed, it doesn't make sense to go all the way to Cornwall and back when you only have basically 48 hours. There are many lovely parts of England much closer to London where you could do photography.

Thanks so much for the tip on flybe. Much cheaper than train and only 1 hour flight. I assume i could rent a car there and grab an airport hotel.

Isle of Wight? Just spent a long weekend there with the family and as is often the case, you overlook what's on your doorstep for places further afield. Whilst we've been to the IOW on several occasions and I've spent a lot of time there investigating a criminal case we haven't visited it as much as we should have.

There is so many fantastic areas there, personally I think it beats The Cotswolds hands down, glorious countryside, delightful little villages full of thatched cottages, fantastic coastline and for those who hanker after the White Cliffs of Dover get yourself over to The Needles for spectacular views of imposing chalk cliffs. It has everything that those who want to visit The Cotswolds are looking for and more.

We returned late this afternoon but managed to fit in a visit to Carisbrooke Castle (an English Heritage site) and it ranks up there as one of the best castles I've visited.

Easy to get to. Train direct from London to Portsmouth and either the ferry or hovercraft to the island. There's an extensive public transport network of buses and rail (old London underground trains) so a car isn't a necessity and the buses will certainly take you to the most popular and scenic places. It's a lot easier option than Cornwall.
