In general, what is the etiquette for shopping in England? If I want to try something on, can I just take the item into the dressing room? Do you leave unwanted items in the dressing room, or do you put them back on the shelf? Anything a newbie should know when shopping in general in the UK that may be different from the US? Thanks!
It's pretty much the same as the US and depends on the store.
For unwanted clothes, there might be a rail in the dressing room area where you leave them. Or return them. I personally never leave things in the actual fitting room. I have the courtesy of returning it.
You may find shops a bit shorter on staff than they used to be but generally… if you see a staff member, just indicate that you’re taking the items in. Or there may be someone sitting outside the changing rooms to nod you through. Otherwise, just go straight to the changing rooms.
On exit from the changing rooms, most shops will have a rail to put unwanted clothes that you’ve tried on. Or a staff member will see you and ask “how did you get on?” At which point you tell them what you want to buy and they’ll take the unwanted items from you.
some places count the number of items and give you a number. When you come out you give back the number card and the total of "to buy" and "not wanted" will add to that number. They hope.
Queuing. We like to queue. There is nothing more unacceptable to a Brit than jumping a queue.

That pertains to driving too.
Long well behaved queue for a roundabout yesterday, a clown comes flying down the hard shoulder undertaking a quarter of a mile of traffic and barges in at the roundabout. oh, does that law apply to me too?
We love visiting the British Isles. Even though having to drive on the left, we find British and Irish drivers to be very polite.
Also, on waiting in line, yes, Brits don't break in line, unlike in other parts of the World like the Mid-East and China.

Yes there is......American Lipton tea.
BTW, to all our British friends who posted on this thread---the way you describe things in the UK is the same as in the US.
One thing you don’t get in the UK is the salesperson offering to “start a changing room for you” if you have a large armful of clothes to try on - I do appreciate that when I shop in the US
Don’t ask to try on any “pants.”
I apologize, in advance, for the bad joke but I could not resist.
Depends on the store
