Sherborne Village - The Cotswolds

Our first time on a RS tour!

Prior to embarking on the Best of England tour this spring, my husband and I plan to arrive a couple of days early in Bath to visit Sherborne Village in the Cotswolds, focusing on St Mary Magdalene Church/Churchyard adjoining Sherborne House (Ancestry research). Given the reported transportation issues within the Cotswolds, we assume our best bet would be to hire a rental car in Bath and navigate ourselves (altho open to suggestions!). We are wondering whether it would be best to base ourselves out of Bath where our RS tour commences, or whether it would make more sense to stay within the Cotswolds if renting a vehicle?

The Cotswolds conjures certain images in my mind and given we only see a portion of it on the RS tour, we'd also be open to other recommendations to see/do/stay, in addition to visiting Sherborne Village.

Many thanks!

My sister and I spent ten days in the Cotswolds and rented a 15th century cottage (in Blockley - very small village). We had rented a car in Evesham and drove around all of the little villages - delightful. My sister did very well driving on "the other side" and in the small villages it wasn't a problem. We liked the Slaughters (especially Lower Slaughter), Broadway (has gorgeous thacked roofed homes and a wonderful pub), Chipping Camden, Snowshill (Bridget Jones' Diary), Winchcombe's Sudley Castle, Bourton-on-the-Water is an English Venice, and walking the Cotswold Way - a favorite! I would suggest finding a place in the Cotswolds and enjoy day trips from there. I believe you are correct about transportation being iffy, other than a car rental, in the Cotswolds (unless you bike or walk - ha!). We had so many lovely lunches and dinners at the country pubs. Driving village to village, we discovered organic cheese farms, lavender farm (in Snowshill), etc. The maze, if it is still in Bourton-on-the-Water, was a hoot. The fruit/veggie market in Moreton-on-Marsh was a plus. My notes say we would stay in Stow-in-the-Wold our next visit. If you go there, find St. Edward's Church and check out the two yew trees that have grown into the outside of the backdoor of the church. Stratford was a "big" city and not fun to drive in but seeing Anne Hathaway's house was very interesting! I hope my hints help!

Thanks Nigel and James - I was able to locate Sherborne Village on the map, and had previously found there was a bus from Bath; however, given it's only available one day a week and affords limited time to explore the area, we didn't feel it would meet our needs.

Kathy - thank you for your insights and recommendations; I will certainly look into those ideas and perhaps consider adding extra time to explore before our RS tour commences.

Appreciate everyone's insights!

I would stay at one of the towns or villages in the Cotswolds before your Bath meet-up with the tour.
This will be a lot more convenient than trying to drive there from Bath to tour the Cotswolds.

Thanks Rebecca, that seems to be the theme, which we will most assuredly follow. Thanks again everyone for your input!
