Settle Carlise Railway is 150 this year and offering tickets for the journey for just £1.50

I picked this up from BBC news and it is flagged up the Friends of Settle Carlisle Facebook as coming soon.

Lonely Planet named it as one of the top 10 most scenic train trips in Europe and elsewhere it has been known as the "Line that refused to die". The Government had plans to close the line but it was reprieved after a long, successful campaign against closure. Michael Portillo frequently stated that saving the Settle-Carlisle railway line from closure when he was Minister of Transport in 1989 was his "greatest achievement" or "proudest moment" in politics.

Oh, that's such a neat thing for them to do! I really wanted to go on the Settle-Carlisle railway when I was there in 2024, and I just couldn't work it out, but I'm glad that it's been saved. Maybe I can get there on my next trip to the UK.

Thanks, wasleys!

This flash sale is now on, for travel between 22 May and 17 July.

15,000 such fares at £1.50 each are on offer for select dates and times.

The sale lasts until 22 May, or until all tickets are sold, if sooner.

Also, by chance this morning I'm on the Settle-Carlisle line as part of a longer journey to Lincoln.
I am on newly reliveried and named 3 car unit 158754- named Settle Carlisle 150, and internally liveried with the story of the line, and of each station.

I started writing this sat on that train awaiting departure. Then we were told the S and C was closed by a lightning strike, so I have just diverted from Carlisle to Newcastle, for LNER to York, change for another LNER to Retford, change for Lincoln- under normal cross industry mutual aid agreements.
That is where being able to book seats at a moment's notice on the LNER website pays dividends.

It will get me there at the same time as via Leeds (hopefully).

I am on a Northern Rail complimentary ticket (strictly their trains only), so it feels very weird to be on LNER.

It was like a bomb going off in Chester at 2am this morning. One of the loudest storms I've ever experienced.
The whole house shook. I'm not sure if it was static electricity in the air or a minor power surge but there was a very loud clap, flash of lightening and i got an electric shock from my in ear head phones.

Today was a shining example of how the rail industry works together in adversity.

I had no sooner got to Newcastle than it was announced the East Coast Main Line was closed south of Stevenage, due to an intentional fatality.

So while LNER had been assisting Northern, now everyone was assisting LNER- Avanti, London North Western, East Midlands, Lumo, Grand Central, Scotrail, Thameslink, Great Northern, Northern.
All time and route restrictions were removed from all ticket types, even Advances. The idea being just to get people moving.
I had trains calling at Newark, Retford and Doncaster cancelled from under me- so ultimately routed via Leeds and Sheffield on the principle of keep on moving slowly in the right general direction.
Under all the circumstances a 72 minute late arrival at Lincoln was very creditable.
No I won't be claiming delay repay, and trying to explain the weird route, also everyone did so well today.

due to an intentional fatality

I'm not sure that the "intentional" has been established. This was a man who had just used force to escape a prisoner transfer van and was on the run. I'm not sure that motive has been established yet.

Real time trains is not infallible. Several times recently it has reported Avanti running 22 car trains- I was on one last week.
That happens when there is a very late set swap - more often than not when a service has started short- the one I was on had started short northbound at Stafford, rather than Euston. So it was showing the rostered set out of Euston + the set that started at Stafford. Needless to say I was on an 11 car train.
And RTT frequently shows the GWR sleeper as 2 cars, when it is 6 or 7. That has caused me consternation several times when my scheduled train car was missing. No idea why that happens.
But I am traveling back today, deciding as I go on one of 4 permitted routes, largely based on the stock allocations which are showing- via the Hope Valley, Copy Pit, Clapham or Settle. Three out of 4 will get me to a certain fish and chip shop at the same time tonight!!
Yesterday was the 3rd fatality I've personally been involved in on the East Coast in 3 weeks- it has been a bad few weeks.

I'm just glad if something turns up, don't get picky about what! I also have a back door access to TIGER which can also give locally added clues to what's happening.

And you're not "involved" with a fatality if you were only a passenger, being involved mean much more.....

Me.crewe,

Loosely I was hoping to take the 1245 Yorkshire Flyer from Sheffield to Leeds. All the hourly flyers are cancelled again today, so it's the 1248 semi fast.
With 2 two car trains combined into 1 two car train there is no reason why I would travel on it if packed out, if I can take the 1314 Hope Valley route instead with a 3 car train, as my ticket is flexible enough.
As it happens the 1248 wasn't unduly busy, but worth having back up plans.

Likewise the Settle Carlisle line has capacity problems at the moment due to these £1.50 fares. At least twice this week people have been left physically unable to board trains because they have been 2 car, rather than the scheduled 3 or 4 car. So it's worth being able to make a choice, if I need to.

So, I'm not being "picky", but rather being rational, using all the available information. A benefit of not being on Advance, split tickets.
