We will be in England in early October. We will be in York for a few days so I am planning to rent a car and visit Chatsworth House, used as “Pemberley” in the movie, Pride and Prejudice. I am 72 years old, healthy and have not been in any accidents over 55 years of driving. Has anyone rented a car and if you have, do I need an IDP?
You do not need an IDP in the UK. All you need is your driver's license.
An IDP basically translates your license into a few differrent languages. Your US Driver's LIcense is already in English.
I am 76 and renting in the Lake District next month. No problems (no IDP)
Regards,
Dennis
Some agencies do tack on an extra fee for those over 70+, but there are many who do not. I know that Arnold Clark, who I have rented with in the past (and highly recommend them) does not charge a fee (you can also rent Arnold Clark cars through Celtic Legend, who is very easy to work with). If you rent through AutoEurope, a consolidator, you will see a notice that some of their agencies do charge fees, so it just depends.
thank you for the information and tips!
